Palmer College of Chiropractic celebrated its 125th anniversary in September at its main campus in Davenport, Iowa, but that wasn't all; the institution also announced the largest fundraising campaign in its century-plus history: "Daring and Driven." The campaign aims to raise $25 million "to educate the best chiropractors in the world." Paul VanDuyne, DC and his wife, Donna VanDuyne, DC, are co-chairs of the campaign and have contributed $2.5 million to help energize it.
"Palmer College has a historic and celebrated past, but the best is yet to come," said Palmer's Chancellor and CEO, Dennis Marchiori, DC, PhD. "We know chiropractic is in a growth mode, and with Palmer's own growth, we're setting the pace for the profession."
New Chair of WFC Research Council
Dr. Sidney Rubenstein is the new chair of the World Federation of Chiropractic Research Council. Formerly vice chair, he fills the void left by Dr. Christine Goertz, who stepped down recently after more than 10 years of service upon being named vice chair for implementation of spine health innovations in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Duke University School of Medicine. The WFC Board made the announcement in late September.
Dr. Rubenstein's distinguished career includes working with the Cochrane Collaboration and the World Health Organization; he currently serves as associate professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The Right Nutrition to Make History
You may have seen / read the mainstream news celebrating Cyril Derreumaux's historic accomplishment: completing the first-ever solo, unassisted, human-powered kayak voyage from California to Hawaii. What you might not know is that Cyril wasn't entirely alone on the 91-day excursion – prior to his departure, he met with the Standard Process Nutrition Innovation Center team in Kannapolis, N.C., to help determine which supplements would best help him succeed.
"Our job was to help Cyril take on the unfamiliar with as much confidence as possible," said Kristine Polley, PhD, scientific affairs manager for Standard Process. "Providing a solid foundation of nutritional support is essential when undertaking an event that will push both mind and body to their limits."
Parker University's new South Building, which serves as a student lounge and was completed in 2021, is now the Jack Donovan Lounge in honor of Dr. John G. "Jack" Donovan, a former Parker Board of Trustees member who retired in 2020 after nearly 70 years in chiropractic practice. Dr. Donovan is also one of 12 founding partners of the college.
2022 Student Scholarship Winner
Life University student Dustin Biggerstaff is the latest recipient of the Foxworth Family Scholarship. The $10,000 scholarship is fully funded by ChiroHealthUSA and established in honor of company president Dr. Ray Foxworth's parents, Dr. Betty Pace Mathews and Dr. Charles Vernon Mathews. In addition to the $10,000 scholarship, the annual award also features $5,000 in cash and a $10,000 donation to the student's college.
"Being the recipient of the Foxworth Family Scholarship reinforces that the profession of chiropractic chose me to continue to be of service to my community," said Dustin upon learning he had been chosen. "To receive this scholarship is a blessing."
The application window for next year's scholarship opened on Sept. 1, 2022, and will close on April 30, 2023. As with this year's scholarship winner, the 2023 winner will be announced at the Florida Chiropractic Association's convention and expo (The National) in Orlando, Fla., in August.
