60,000 New Chiropractic Patients in One Month

The Joint Corp. recently announced its nationwide locations had provided more than $1.7 million in free chiropractic care to 60,000 new patients as part of a June promotion to "get Americans moving" during the pandemic that "continues to generate great stress on Americans, resulting in an increase in neck and back pain, sedentary behavior and lower levels of activity."

"Since the onset of COVID-19, nearly two-thirds of Americans were forced to work from home, wreaking havoc on their spines," said Peter D. Holt, president and CEO of The Joint Corp., in a company press release. "It's clear from our results that thousands of Americans felt a need to incorporate chiropractic care into their healthcare routines to maintain overall health and wellness. As an essential healthcare service, we are committed to being there for our patients when and where available during the pandemic, as they seek relief from pain and for their wellbeing."

Logan Faculty Member Named to Baldrige Award Board of Examiners

Lee Van Dusen, DC, vice presifent of strategic performance & continuous improvement at Logan University, has been named to the board of examiners responsible for reviewing and evaluating applications for the 2020 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Dr. Van Dusen was appointed by the director of the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Established by Congress in 1987, the Baldrige Award is named after the 26th U.S. Secretary of Commerce and is considered the nation's highest award honoring organizational innovation and performance excellence. To learn more, visit www.nist.gov/baldrige/baldrige-award.

Dr. Sherry MCAllister Promoted to F4CP President

Sherry McAllister, DC, MSEd, CCSP, executive vice president of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress since 2015, is now president of the foundation as of August 2020. Under her leadership, F4CP membership has almost quadrupled since her arrival, from 8,000 to nearly 29,000; and her promotion of chiropractic and non-drug health care has spanned print, pubic speaking and other mediums in the U.S. and abroad.

"I look forward to working with Dr. McAllister in her new capacity as President," said Kent Greenawalt, F4CP founder and chairman, in announcing the appointment. "She has the drive, charisma and relationships that will accelerate F4CP to new heights and I am very pleased she has accepted this new challenge."

Western States Has a New Home

The University of Western States' grand opening of its new campus was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but a new home the university indeed has after relocating its campus. The new campus, still in Northeast Portland, Oreg., is approximately three miles from the old campus, and according to UWS, "now [features] state-of-the-art facilities with technologically advanced classrooms, collaborative workspaces and designated amenities strategically composed to create optimal learning environments."

Instrument Adjusting for OA? New research Getting Major Attention

Scientific Reports, an open-access, peer-reviewed journal from Nature Research, has published recent findings that support the use of the Activator for osteoarthritis. The study noted improvements in subchondral bone, cartilage, joint inflammation and pain, with study authors concluding that the adjusting instrument "may represent a promising alternative therapy for the treatment of OA."

"We certainly have plenty of clinical and anecdotal evidence that chiropractic adjustment using an Activator instrument can facilitate significant improvement in patients with osteoarthritis," commented Activator Methods Chairman and Founder, Dr. Arlan Fuhr. "We now have another detailed scientific study that confirms what we've found to be true in practice."

The Chiropractic Journal of Australia is now under the editorship of longtime DC columnist Dr. Anthony Rosner and accepting submissions – "not only research studies, but case studies, reviews, and commentaries as well," per the new editor. The research journal, active as a chiropractic research vehicle for three decades, has published numerous important studies in support of the chiropractic profession, "not the least of which was Terrett's early work which debunked attacks upon cervical manipulations by demonstrating all the lifestyle risks that produced  far higher prevalences of arterial dissections from lifestyle events," according to Dr. Rosner.
