First Woman President of NBCE Elected
National Board of Chiropractic Examiners' delegates elected Dr. Donna L. Craft president of the NBCE at the board's annual meeting in a historic vote that yielded the first woman president in the 51-year history of the organization.
"I am honored to take on the important role of day-to-day leadership at the NBCE," said Dr. Craft. "Our first task is to maintain fiscal responsibility, while responding to current opportunities for growth. This includes overseeing the computer-based testing initiative, where success may lead to a model that can be expanded to include other chiropractic college test sites."
She added: "In the post-licensure era, our focus will be on building a solid foundation for the Ethics and Boundaries Assessment Services as they offer their products to licensed professions beyond chiropractic."
Dr. Craft resides in Brooklyn, Mich., and practices in Ann Arbor. In addition to her new role as NBCE president, she continues service as district II director.
Wisconsin Approves New Informed Consent Language
Wisconsin Act 345 includes a new section specific to the requirements to provide informed consent to patients. According to Section 2, 446.08 of the act:
"The reasonable chiropractor standard is the standard for informing a patient under this section. [It] requires disclosure only of information that a reasonable chiropractor would know and disclose under the circumstances. The chiropractor's duty to inform the patient under this section does not require disclosure of any of the following:
(1): Detailed technical information that in all probability a patient would not understand.
(2) Risks apparent or unknown to the patient.
(3) Extremely remote possibilities that might falsely or detrimentally alarm the patient.
(4) Information in emergencies where failure to provide treatment would be more harmful to the patient than treatment.
(5) Information in cases where the patient is incapable of consenting.
(6) Information about alternate modes of treatment for any condition the chiropractor has not included in his or her diagnosis at the time the chiropractor informs the patient.
Sections 3-9 establish similar informed consent exemptions for podiatrists, dentists, optometrists and dentists, although as Steven Conway, DC, Esq., executive director of the Chiropractic Society of Wisconsin, noted, exemption #3 is significant to DCs in that it may help address the stroke / CVA issue.

The April-May 2014 issue of American Airlines Nexos, the carrier's in-flight Spanish-language magazine, featured an article on "The Power of Self-Healing" ("El Poder de Autosanación") by Dr. Fabrizio Mancini, president emeritus of Parker University. The article promotes the power of exercise, nutrition, stress relief and other strategies for living a "healthy, energetic and disease-free" life.
AA Nexos is published six times annually, reaching an estimated 8.9 million passengers per issue. Dr. Mancini's article is his latest in a string of PR efforts to promote chiropractic and natural healing that began in 2012 with appearances on "Dr. Phil" and "The Doctors."
