Iowa Governor Terry Branstad paid tribute to the chiropractic centennial by inviting Vickie Palmer, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Palmer Chiropractic University System and Palmer administrators, to his Des Moines office in June.
"I, along with the people of Iowa, want to recognize the great contributions of the chiropractic profession during this chiropractic centennial year," said Governor Branstad. "We are very proud to have the world's third largest health care profession born in the state of Iowa, in Davenport, 100 years ago. I would also like to pay tribute to Vickie Palmer, her family, and Palmer College for their historic contribution to chiropractic and to the people of Iowa."
Other Palmer University System representatives in attendance at the meeting were Chancellor Michael Crawford; President Dr. Virgil Strang; Gary Mohr, executive director for institutional advancement; and Dr. Steven Kraus, a Palmer graduate and president of the Iowa Chiropractic Society.
UCF Performs 30,000 Free Adjustments on Kids
The Universal Chiropractic Foundation, Inc. (UCF) collects and administers funds with the goal of establishing chiropractic centers to provide free chiropractic care to children. The organization hopes to establish satellite centers throughout the U.S. and world. The 21 members of UCF have just tallied their 1994 totals and announced that they had given over 30,000 free adjustments to children. Foundation President Dr. Todd Herold said the goal is to give free chiropractic care to millions of children each year by the year 2020.
Chiropractors can help the Universal Chiropractic Foundation achieve its goal in several ways. As a UCF member, a DC must adhere to all by-laws in providing free care to all children under the age of 13. As a supporting member, a doctor may donate money and/or time to UCF functions. Currently, UCF is seeking funding to help in the creation of their first children's chiropractic center. Texas Chiropractic College President Dr. Shelby Elliott.
Dr. Elliott Appointed to Economic CouncilDr. Shelby Elliott, president of Texas Chiropractic College (TCC), was appointed chairman-elect for the Southeast Economic Development Council (SEED) by its executive committee. Dr. Elliott's term will be April 1, 1996 through March 31, 1997.
SEED is a voluntary organization involving the participation of seven chambers of commerce in southeast Harris County, Texas; The council's purpose is promoting economic development, tourism, small business, and civic, commercial, and industrial progress in their communities.
Commenting on Dr. Elliott's appointment, current Chairman Barry Beasley said, "Dr. Elliott has a history of exceptional accomplishment and experienced leadership at Texas Chiropractic College and in his community involvement."
Peter Cox is ranked number one on the US team of four sabre fencers.
KC Student Peter Cox Competes at World University Games
Peter Cox, a student at Cleveland Chiropractic College of Kansas City, traveled to Fukuoka City, Japan August 16th to compete in sabre fencing at the World University Games, a 13-day sports festival of international athletes. He went into the competition ranked number one on the US team of four sabre fencers.
His two-week stay included a week of training, with the fencing competition held August 26-September 2nd.
Upcoming competitions for Peter include Kansas City, Missouri, September 30-October 1; Brasov, Romania, October 14-16; Montreal, Canada October 27.
