CCCKC President to Serve on CCE Practice Guidelines Task Force

CCCKC President Dr. Carl Cleveland III has been asked to serve as a member of the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE)'s task force on practice guidelines.

The task force, in response to the Mercy Center Guidelines, will work on establishing, developing, evaluating, and amending the practice guidelines and will report its findings to the CCE executive committee.

Dr. Cleveland stated the Mercy Conference was a "... commendable first step towards achievement of practice guidelines so essential to the advancement of chiropractic." He further said the guidelines' process "... must remain dynamic and allow for future revision in order to receive broad endorsement from within the profession."

CCE President Dr. James Winterstein said the task force will:

  • study the Mercy Guidelines as a basis of understanding;

  • develop a process for regular guidelines' review and modification; and

  • recommend to CCE a practice guidelines organizational structure responsive and representative of the chiropractic profession.

The task force expects the participating professional organizations to provide the financial support for the new practice guidelines organization. The task force will present a proposal for organizational financial support.

CCCKC Becomes a Member of Regional Council for Higher Education

Cleveland Chiropractic College of Kansas City (CCCKC) has become an affiliate institutional member of the Kansas City Regional Council for Higher Education (KCRCHE). The KCRCHE Board of Directors voted unanimously to extend the invitation to CCCKC and President Carl Cleveland III accepted.

Founded in 1962, KCRCHE is a multipurpose, voluntary consortium of colleges and universities that acts as the principal agency in the Kansas City area through which member institutions cooperate to strengthen educational services and improve operating efficiency. KCRCHE members work with each other, nonprofit organizations, civic/government agencies, and business and industry to identify and meet educational needs of Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas.

"The affiliation with KCRCHE not only recognizes this institution's role in the community," said Dr. Cleveland, "But it also brings increased opportunities to participate in KCRCHE programs and services at favorable rates."

Other KCRCHE institutions include Avila College, Baker University, Benedictine College, Central Missouri State University, Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas State University, Saint Mary College, University of Kansas, the University of Kansas Medical Center, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

CCCKC Meets with State Farm Claims Adjusters

CCCKC President Dr. Carl Cleveland III and Executive Vice President Dr. Dwight D. Gerred gave a presentation on chiropractic care at the college to State Farm Insurance claims adjusters on October 1st. Sarah Powell, a State Farm claims specialist, organized the visit because more and more claims for chiropractic treatment are being processed in State Farm's offices. According to Ms. Powell, 75 percent of the auto accident claims that she is seeing in State Farm offices are for chiropractic care, and that number is rising steadily.

Ms. Powell explained: "We are seeing a lot of claims for chiropractic care, and we wanted to know what chiropractic is all about. Now that I understand chiropractic better, it has helped remove the negative impressions people had given me." Ms. Powell said that she is planning to try to organize a similar presentation at CCCKC for Missouri State Farm adjusters.

Parker Photobiography

A photobiographical book of Parker founder Dr. James William Parker, spanning nearly a half century of chiropractic history, has been completed after an eight year effort.

The book commemorates the life and achievements of Dr. Parker, from boyhood to founding of the college, featuring some 3,300 photos. The 13"x14" 536-page book weighs nearly eight pounds, and only 1,000 hardbound books were printed, making it a limited edition collector's item.

The mammoth project of writing, organizing and selecting photos was undertaken by author Marge Runnells Springer, a chiropractic assistant and wife of a DC, who worked for Dr. Parker for 12 years and attended Parker seminars for 38 years. Before the book was completed, Marge Springer died in the summer of 1991, having spent seven years on the project.

The book was completed in her memory, according to her last wishes, by members of the Parker staff. The book is available for a $250 donation to the college.
