Despite horrendous weather, a crowd of over 100 chiropractors, family, and friends gathered in Columbia at the Sheraton Hotel for this black-tie event. The featured speaker for the evening was coach Mike Krzysewski of the perennial nationally ranked Duke Blue Devils' college basketball team. For the avid basketball fan, it was indeed an honor to be addressed by a leader in this field. For the chiropractic community, his message offered serious food for thought.
He discussed the teams he had coached over the years and what had made them winners on the court. "A coach alone does not make a successful basketball team, nor does a group of five talented players. A successful team is made of a coach who is sensitive to the needs of his players and a group of players who play as a team." He explained how this concept applies to professions such as chiropractic: As on a basketball team, each member of the profession will have his own personality, but if their ultimate goal is the same, they must learn to ban together and perform as a single unit. In any successful profession there has to be unity. United you accomplish all things; individually, you accomplish very little.
Joining Coach Mike Krzysewski on the podium as master of ceremonies was the South Carolina Chiropractic Association's General Counsel Mr. Mike Kelly. Other speakers included South Carolina Chiropractic Association (SCCA) President Dr. Hank Hulteen; Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) President Dr. George McClelland; and South Carolina Lt. Governor Nick Theodore.
The SCCA is very proud of the doctors who helped to make this event a reality. We applaud Dr. Willis for his philanthropic efforts on behalf of chiropractic. We are truly fortunate to have devoted people like him on our team here in South Carolina. As the decade of the 90s moves along, we look forward to the inevitable growth of this worthwhile cause.
