Teaching Med Students/Faculty About Chiropractic

A new textbook from the faculty of the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago may represent an important step toward opening the medical community's eyes and ears to the benefits of chiropractic and other forms of complementary and alternative medicine.

The Textbook of Complementary and Alternative Medicine was edited by C.S. Yuan and E.J. Bieber, who acknowledge that practicing physicians lack proper training in CAM. Their stated goal of the text, which is a preface to a CAM course given to medical students at the Pritzker School and continuing education courses offered to faculty members at the University of Chicago, is to summarize what is and what is not presently known about the use and efficacy of various fields of CAM.

Most of the contributors are medical school faculty with no particular background in CAM. The short chapter on chiropractic, authored primarily by Lucy Dey, MD, from the department of anesthesia and critical care at the university, paints a positive portrait of chiropractic, which is particularly significant since it comes from a medical perspective: "[Chiropractic] appears to be effective in treating many health problems. It is evident that knowledge of chiropractic therapies will help physicians provide better care as this field continues to define itself and move from being considered an alternative approach to being a part of standard medical practice."

Larry Patten Appointed CEO of Palmer College of Chiropractic

At its Feb. 2-4, 2006 meeting, the Palmer College of Chiropractic Board of Trustees voted unanimously to appoint Larry G. Patten as chief executive officer of the college. As CEO, Patten will work with a team of Palmer administrators to implement and manage the "one college, three campuses" structure, as defined by the board last year.

"I look forward to working with Larry to provide the stability, focus and growth that has been initiated over the past two years," commented Peter Martin, DC, president of Palmer West and Palmer Florida. "He has a passion to serve Palmer and the chiropractic profession."

"A good leader blends ethics, intelligence, commitment and sound judgment," added Donald Kern, DC, president of the Davenport campus. "All of those traits are found within Larry Patten."

New Academic Dean at Logan

Allen Schwab, PhD, recently joined Logan College of Chiropractic as dean of academic affairs and faculty professor. Dr. Schwab will work closely with Patrick Browne, EdD, who recently became Logan's vice president of academic affairs, succeeding William Ramsey, PhD. Schwab, who served as dean at Eureka College in central Illinois since 1999, has previous teaching experience at Northwest Missouri State University, Washington University (St. Louis), and Lindenwood University (Charles County, Mo.).
