In Remembrance: Drs. Maylon Drake, Gordon Holman

By Editorial Staff

Dr. Maylon Drake, former president of Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, passed away on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at the age of 89. Dr. Drake assumed the presidency in February 1980 and served for 10 years, retiring from the position in 1990 but continuing to serve the college as chancellor for the next five years.

In 1995, he became a member of the LACC Board of Regents and later was named chancellor emeritus.

Dr. Drake also served in several capacities for the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE), holding the position of vice president and then president of the organization, and subsequently as a public member.

"The passing of one of the university's great leaders comes with great sadness," commented Dr. John Scaringe, interim president of Southern California University of Health Sciences. "Dr. Drake was widely respected for all his contributions in education and accreditation. His loss will be felt throughout the university for years to come."

Also on Jan. 18, the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners announced the October 2009 passing of Dr. Gordon Holman, the board's first executive director. Dr. Holman helped form the board in 1963 and served as ED for 18 years, from 1963 to 1981. With a longtime practice in Cheyenne, Wyo., Dr. Holman was also involved in state chiropractic affairs over the years, including service as president of the Wyoming Chiropractic Association.
