Graduation day is a special event for students and their families.
And while it's not unusual for proud parents, spouses, siblings and other relatives to attend the occasion, when Nigerian Christiana Obebe graduated from New York Chiropractic College in August, about a dozen of her relations flew in from Nigeria for the ceremony.
Christiana was one of 78 graduating, and one of 30 graduates inducted into NYCC's Phi Chi Omega Chiropractic Honor Society at an award's ceremony held the evening before the commencement.
The awards ceremony featured a special tribute in memory of classmate Trevor Bader, who died in Dec. 1995 while on vacation in Mexico. A brass sundial was donated in his memory by the graduating class. The sundial will be placed in NYCC's Memorial Park.
NYCC Honored by the Special Olympics
Each year, the board of directors of the New York Special Olympics recognizes an individual or group for their efforts to enhance the Special Olympics organization. This year their award committee has selected New York Chiropractic College for that honor, stating that they were "very impressed by the many outstanding efforts" of the college.
The award will be presented to NYCC representatives at an Oct. 18th ceremony at the New York State Police Academy in Albany.
