ICA Takes Stand on Iowa Immunization Issue

By Editorial Staff
The International Chiropractors Association has called upon the Iowa House of Representatives to restore a statutory protection in a current bill that would allow Iowa citizens the right to decline otherwise mandatory immunizations as a matter of religious belief. The Iowa Senate recently voted to remove the longstanding exemption.

The ICA circulated a letter to the 21 members of the Human Resources Committee in the Iowa House that read, in part:

"As an organization, we strongly believe that every citizen has the basic right to exercise control over their own personal health care, especially regarding invasive procedures with uncertain outcomes such as immunization.

"We urge the Iowa House of Representatives to restore the fundamental freedom to decline mandatory immunization as a matter of conscience or religious belief."

The ICA has also adopted a formal policy statement on the issue of personal control over immunization and vaccination decisions, which was provided to the Iowa legislators. The purpose of this statement was to reflect the ICA's understanding of the importance of natural immunity and the significant risks that accompany artificial vaccination procedures.

Life University to Host Health Forum on Tobacco Use

As part of its continuing relationship with the World Health Organization, Life University will host and coordinate a meeting of nongovernmental organizations in support of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control April 14-16. Both the WHO and the Pan American Health Organization will cosponsor the meetings, which will take place at the university's conference center.

The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is intended to address the global problem of tobacco use. Among the issues to be discussed are: youth access to tobacco; tobacco advertising and marketing; prevention efforts; the environmental effects of tobacco smoke; information sharing; and research. These issues are expected to be brought before the WHO's general assembly in May 2000 for a vote on establishing an international treaty to reduce tobacco use. Look for an update on the results of the April meetings in an upcoming issue of Dynamic Chiropractic.
