Governor Appoints DCs to Washington State Chiropractic Quality Assurance Commission

By Editorial Staff
Noel Lloyd, DC, of Redmond, Washington, and Joseph Howells, DC, of Emunclaw, have been appointed to the state's Chiropractic Quality Assurance Commission by Washington state Governor Gary Locke.

Dr. Lloyd (Palmer, 1971) and Dr. Howells (Palmer, 1976) were recommended to the governor by the Washington State Chiropractic Association. This is the second time that Dr. Lloyd has been named to the commission. Dr. Howells will serve as the commission's chairman.

The Chiropractic Quality Assurance Commission was established in 1994, when the Washington state chiropractic examination board, disciplinary board and peer review committee were restructured. The commission strives to enhance and maintain chiropractic's level of professionalism in Washington, and aims to ensure that the state's chiropractors uphold the practice of chiropractic with the highest level of integrity.

Youthfest '98

Sixteen representatives from the Palmer chiropractic clinics, all specializing in pediatric chiropractic, staffed the Palmer booth at this year's Youthfest in Davenport, Iowa to examine more than 300 children. The annual July event is organized by local volunteers and helps young people learn about chiropractic and how chiropractors provide care.

LACC 5K to Benefit Brain-Injured Children

The Los Angeles College of Chiropractic will host its first annual 5K walk/run on Saturday, September 26. The race will benefit Help for Brain Injured Children (HBIC), a local charity.

"Over the past year LACC interns have provided daily rehabilitation and developmental assistance to the children at HBIC," said Dr. Brad Smith, a race committee member and LACC clinician. "We wanted to support this wonderful organization that is helping children with special needs."

The 3.1 mile race begins and ends on the LACC campus. Check-in and late registration begins at 6:30 on the morning of the 26th, but participants may stop by LACC's public relations office on Thursday, September 24 or Friday, September 25 to pick up a race packet. Awards will go the top male and female runners in each age division.

For more information contact the LACC hotline at (562) 947-8755, ext. 422.

Chiropractic Care for Karate Masters

This year's Yellow Rose Karate Summer World Challenge, an international competition that attracts some of the world's top competitors, was held in San Antonio, Texas June 26-27.

DCs Perry and Pamala Mitchell of San Antonio were there to treat the competitors, and related some gratifying moments:

  • A young female black belt from Houston had decided not to compete because she was experiencing acute neck pain that restricted her range of motion. After receiving an adjustment, she felt confident enough to compete and ended up winning her division.

  • A black belt from Guatemala, experiencing pain when lifting his arm above shoulder level, was treated and able to turn in a performance that won him not only his division but the title of "grand champion" of the tournament.
