Yale Spinal Biomechanics Expert Speaks at Life

One of the nation's leading experts on spinal biomechanics, Dr. Manoher Panjabi, recently spoke to students at Life College.

Professor of mechanical engineering and director of biomechanical research at Yale University, Dr. Panjabi presented a program based on his two decades of biomechanical research. He is co-author of Clinical Biomechanics of the Spine, and has done extensive research on measuring intersegmental motion of the spine and the response of vertebral motor units to loads placed on them.

Dr. Ray is First Female to Chair Life's Board

The Life College Board of Trustees has elected its first woman chairperson, Rebecca Ray, DC, to oversee operations at the 21-year-old institution. This is only one of many "firsts" for Dr. Ray. She was elected the first woman chiropractor to Life's Board (1982); the first female in Georgia elected to the ICA Board of representatives (1983); and in 1991, she delved into local politics, becoming the first woman county commissioner in Cherokee County, Georgia.

A former radiology department director at a Jasper, Georgia hospital, Dr. Ray changed careers when she was treated by a chiropractor after a riding accident. A Palmer graduate, she has been practicing in Ball Ground since 1974.

Dr. Ray is an ICA Fellow (1982), and was the Georgia Council of Chiropractic president in 1987-1988.

"There are a lot of glass ceilings for women, but I just ignore them and go on," said Dr. Ray. "We have come a long way in chiropractic."

National, State Leaders Join Life College's King Day Celebration

U.S. House of Representatives member Cynthia McKinney, the first African American woman in Georgia to hold a congressional seat, joined other civil rights leaders speaking Life during a special all-campus assembly commemorating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Rep. McKinney's father, Georgia state rep. J.E. "Billy" McKinney, joined her on the platform to speak. Billy McKinney has been a political mainstay at the state and national level for more than two decades. Also in attendance was Georgia state rep. Tyrone Brooks, who began his lengthy career as a champion of civil rights in the 1960s.

Following an address to the student body, U.S. Congressman Bob Barr, whose district includes Life College, greets Dr. Sid Williams.

Life Names New Director of Development

Life College has appointed David Curry, a former Harvard University official, to the post of director of development. David served as acting director and assistant director of the Harvard-Radcliffe Parents Fund for eight years, developing the fund from a $500,000 unrestricted gift fund to one raising more than $2,500,000 a year.

At Life, Mr. Curry is in charge of managing the college's various fundraising and development programs. He has announced that one of his top priorities is broadening Life's donor base beyond its traditional constituency by creating a parents fund similar to the one he managed at Harvard.
