Commemorative Book of Chiropractic Centennial Is Here

Award-winning Journalist Authors Colorful Chronicle of Yearlong Events

By Editorial Staff
After many months of extensive work and preparation, The Story of the Grand Celebration: Commemorating 100 Years of Chiropractic has been published. The hardcover book, 172 pages illustrated with hundreds of colorful photographs and bright graphics, tells step-by-step the story of chiropractic's 100-year celebration: the behind the scenes planning; kicking off the centennial year; chiropractic's first float in the Rose Parade and the New Year's Eve party; the scientific symposium in Washington, D.C. and the historic symposium in Davenport; telling chiropractic's story to the media; and the grand celebration party. The book concludes with a listing of contributors to the Chiropractic Centennial Foundation, from individual donations of $100 to $15,000, and corporate sponsors from $1,000 to $300,000.

In the foreword to The Story of the Grand Celebration, William Holmberg, DC, president of the Chiropractic Centennial Foundation, notes: "So much happened so fast during the centennial year that a lot remains a blur. This book brings things into focus." The book is a beautiful souvenir of chiropractic's 100th year. Dr. Holmberg however says the book is more than a souvenir or a "vehicle for profession-wide backslapping." It captures "not only the highlights of the centennial year, but also the significance of those activities, lending perspective and context to this milestone event." He emphasized that the centennial was not just a party, "but a coming together of the profession at a critical point in its history..."

The book's author, C. Randall Heuston, has been an award-winning journalist for two decades at the Quad-City Times in Davenport. In Mr. Heuston, the CCF planners found what they were looking for: a professional journalist who had written for and about chiropractic. Early in the centennial year, Mr. Heuston wrote four ads for Palmer University, focusing on chiropractic's determination and integrity. One of the often-quoted lines from his Palmer ads was, "What should we do when the lion roars? Roar back."

The book's professionalism in text, photos, and graphics, is a fitting tribute to the spirit, dedication and hard work done by the Chiropractic Centennial Foundation and the financial support of contributors. The book does more than feature Mr. Heuston's compelling description of chiropractic's centennial: it pictures chiropractors from all over the world bonding to celebrate the profession's courage in its first century, and looking forward with great promise to chiropractic's future.

The book's dedication encapsulates the chiropractic profession's own unique history and heritage of healing, while reminding readers what the centennial was truly celebrating -- chiropractors: "Dedicated to Doctors of Chiropractic, everywhere, past, present and future, who have helped and will continue to help millions of people to better health."
