LACC Students Send Message/Donations to Congregation Whose Church Burned

LACC student Brenda McKee organized a campaign for Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC) students to take a stand against hate crimes by sending support to the fire-damaged New Home Missionary Baptist Church in Sacramento, California.

Brenda walk around campus ringing a bell to attract attention to the cause, collecting $130 in donations, and signatures of 160 students, faculty, and staff on a giant homemade card. The card and donations, which were sent to the Sacramento church, read:

"From our community,
to your community.
May our tears of sorrows
become oceans of joy.
For in our hearts
and in our minds ...
we still have a dream."

 



DC Joins Website for Parents

William Cockburn, DC, a Whittier practitioner, has joined the team of a website designed to provide information to parents on a wide variety of topics. Featured in the "Ask the Pros" section, he offers information on childhood health conditions. He has had several articles posted, including one on scoliosis.

CCCLA Elects New SACA Officers

Cleveland Chiropractic College of Los Angeles (CCCLA) has elected new officers for its chapter of the Student American Chiropractic Association (SACA).

President: Jeanne Ames, an x-ray technician who held an administrative position with a multispecialty medical clinic for 15 years before going to chiropractic college.

Vice President: Yariv Rothman, a vocational nurse with seven years of field experience.

The new officers reported that their mutual goals are to increase student interest in the ACA, keep students informed about pending legislative and chiropractic issues, and increase membership in SACA. CCCLA membership has already increased 25 percent since the two took office in September.

Jeanne and Yariv attended the ACA Mid-Winter Conference in Washington, D.C., October 10-12.

 



Cleveland LA Faculty Members Receive Recognition

Several members of the CCCLA faculty have been recognized for their efforts toward academic advancement and excellence in the classroom.

Dr. Carol Claus, a 1988 CCCLA graduate and chair of chiropractic sciences, and Dr. Stephen Mayer, a 1986 CCCLA graduate and associate professor, recently appeared in Who's Who in America's Teachers. This publication recognizes teachers of merit who have "made a difference" in the lives of students and therefore have been acknowledged for excellence as a distinguished educator.

Dr. Harold Azuma, CCCLA class of '84, and Dr. Vincent Maples, CCCLA class of '78, have completed a 72-hour course in postgraduate education in chiropractic footcare. They passed the appropriate examination to be certified in this specialty.

 



CCCLA Student ABCA Members Honored at Nat'l Convention

Several CCCLA students were in attendance at the American Black Chiropractic Association (ABCA) national convention in Jamaica August 14-18, and were honored by the association. LaRita Gibson was presented "The Harvey," an award named after Harvey Lillard that pays tribute to the ABCA's student of the year. LaRita, along with fellow CCCLA students Mark Gordon, Robert Glover, Vernelle Lucas, Sandra Beddor, and Theodore Shaw were all awarded ABCA scholarships.

 



Chiropractic Interns Give Physicals to L.A. Marathoners

For the third year, CCCLA interns and clinicians donated their time to perform physicals and health screenings on high school age students in the Los Angeles area who were competing in the L.A. Marathon. The CCCLA volunteers did exams and screenings on approximately 350 teenagers. Dr. Michael Birozy, CCCLA clinic director, and Dr. Thomas Carpenter, assistant clinic director, supervised the event. Student coordinators included Jamie Bassel, Gregory Vanvakaris, Stephen Shaw, and Robert Patterson.
