Connecticut DCs Organize Special Olympics Bike Ride
Nevada DCs Treat NCAA Cycling ChampionsOn June 17th, the Connecticut Chiropractic Sports Medicine Committee organized a 60-mile bike ride to benefit the Special Olympic World Games. Beginning just over the state line in Agawam, Massachusetts, nine cyclists including 1993 LACC graduate Dr. David McMullen, pedaled their way across Connecticut and finished in New Haven which is the host city for the World Games. Their efforts were supported along the way by several individuals and businesses who helped provide the cyclists with water, refreshments, and donations for each mile rode.
The bike ride raised over $500 to support the Special Olympic World Games, which has grown since 1968 to become the largest sporting event in the world. This year, from July 1-9, more than 7,200 athletes with mental retardation, along with 2,000 coaches and 15,000 families and friends from 144 countries will converge on the greater New Haven area to compete in a variety of sports at the World Games.
Reno, Nevada DCs Mike Nelson and Dave Seavey treated the University of Washington cycling team during the NCAA cycling championships June 3-4. According to the doctors, many of the riders were already aware of the benefits of chiropractic care, and they eagerly took advantage of the opportunity to get adjusted. Other competitors were pleasantly surprised at the effects of the natural treatment methods chiropractors use to obtain optimal health and performance.
Jury Rules Allstate Must Pay for Spinal Ultrasound
MELBOURNE, Florida -- On June 16th, a jury trial held in Brevard County, Florida ordered Allstate Insurance Company to pay for diagnostic spinal ultrasound as part of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits under an automobile insurance policy. In a two and a half day trial, a six-member panel jury decided in the case that Sena Morty, as a parent of Lucinda Adorka (a minor vs. Allstate Insurance Company) that the diagnostic spinal ultrasound was a necessary medical service and must be paid under PIP law.
The case stems from a motor vehicle accident in which the plaintiff, Ms. Morty's daughter Lucinda Adorka, was injured. Ms. Morty filed for PIP benefits under Florida Statute section 627.736, with the belief all payments would be made on her behalf up to the contractual 80 percent. Allstate made payments for all services except diagnostic spinal ultrasound, prompting the PIP suit.

Sweat Foundation Raises $20,000 in 28 Hours
Dr. William Harris, president of the Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Education (FACE) in Alpharetta, Georgia, issued a challenge to the Roy W. Sweat Foundation to raise $20,000 by September 1st, with the promise that FACE would match that amount. According to Dr. Roy Sweat, the matching challenge was raised by the foundation within 28 hours. Dr. Sweat said his goal is to raise a total of $100,000 for much needed research.

At a meeting in New York City the International Academy of Figure Skating Sports Chiropractic (IAFSSC) was organized by Dr. Stephen Press, who serves as its president. The other officers are Drs. Deborah Kleinman-Cindrich, vice president; Clive Bridgham, general secretary; Lawrence Johnson, treasurer-register; and Scott Cramer, trustee at large. According to Dr. Press, the IAFSSC was created to serve as a liaison between chiropractic physicians who treat figure skaters and the national and world figure skating organizations.
