Chicago Sun-Times health reporter Howard Wolinsky inaugurated his lecture tour of chiropractic colleges Nov. 1 with a presentation at Cleveland Chiropractic College, Kansas City.
Wolinsky and co-author Tom Brune's book is, in their words, the first independent book on the AMA since James Rorty's American Medicine Mobilized was published in 1939 (see "Mass Media Book Examines AMA, Chronicles Campaign against Chiropractic," in July 15, 1994 issue of "DC").
Serpent on the Staff has touched a chord within chiropractic, as it details the AMA's campaign against chiropractic, and reveals interesting details about the organization that only insiders are privy to.
Mr. Wolinsky, who also spoke at the recent meeting of the Congress of Chiropractic State Association (see front page), is a personable speaker with a rye since of humor. Since speaking at CCCKC, Mr. Wolinsky has made speaking stops at NYCC, LACC, CCCLA, Life College West, Northwestern, CMCC, TCC, and will finish the tour at Logan College (Dec. 6).
DCs Join Mission to Help Children in Honduras
Missouri chiropractors Thomas Duke and Larry Lovejoy recently joined more than 31 physicians, dentists, nurses, and assistants volunteering for the not-for-profit Surgical and Medical Assistance Relief Teams (SMART) on a medical mission to Honduras. Each relief team consists of 14-40 volunteers who donate their time and pay for all their own expenses. Drs. Duke and Lovejoy are the only chiropractors on the trip, and are scheduled to perform approximately 50-60 adjustments daily.
SMART was founded several years ago by Michael Searcy and his wife Teresa, of Leawood, Kansas. Their interest was to provide medical care for children in poverty-stricken areas in Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and Guatemala. Between trips the Searcys and other SMART helpers organize supplies, medical material, travel arrangements and volunteers.
LCCW to Offer Postgrad Athletic Performance Course
Beginning January 1995, Life Chiropractic College West will offer a one-year postgraduate program, "certified athletic performance enhancement" (CAPE). Doctors who complete the 144-hour program will achieve the status of certified chiropractic extremity specialist. Courses will range from musculoskeletal injury and repair to emergency care of the injured knee. Topics to be covered include examination, evaluation and adjustive procedures of the lower and upper extremities; radiological examinations; the role of nutrition; rehabilitation and case management; common adjustive techniques; and special considerations for female and pediatric athletes.
Instructors will include chiropractors David Seaman, Abigail Irwin, Stephen Collins, Life West Dean Michael Schmidt, Trent Bachman, Edward Cremata, Mark Lopes, Kathleen King; Jerry Parker, MD, and Bruce Hagen, a paramedic.
