Pennsylvania College of Straight Chiropractic (PCSC) has begun the process of applying to the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) for accreditation (see "Straight Colleges Apply for CCE Recognition in the April 23, 1993 issue of "DC").
Dr. William Fuller, consultant to the CCE, is working closely with PCSC to maximize the college's efforts towards accreditation in the shortest possible time. The outlook, after the initial meeting with Dr. Fuller, was described as quite positive. PCSC is anticipating an on-site visitation from the CCE sometime in the Fall. The college could be accredited as early as January 1994.
NYCC Celebrates Anniversary of Licensure in New York State
In 1963, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller signed the bill recognizing chiropractors as licensed health practitioners in the state. The first New York state license was issued to Julius Dintenfass, DC, on December 17, 1963. Thirty years later, New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) is encouraging chiropractors everywhere to remember and commemorate the battle for licensure.
Chiropractors in New York are being invited to support the "30 for 30 Campaign" with a minimum gift of $30 or a multiple thereof. Funds will be devoted to scholarships facilitating minority access to the chiropractic profession, in recognition of New York State Board of Regents' priority for increasing the number of professionals from underrepresented groups.
"This very special effort is now underway," said NYCC President Dr. Kenneth Padgett. "We have received the support of Mr. Norman Cohen of the NYS Board of Chiropractic, who shares our desire to celebrate this anniversary and at the same time create more opportunities for chiropractic. It is my pleasure to announce that we will match donations made to the campaign."
Alumni of other colleges wishing to donate scholarship funds to the college of their choice are asked to inform NYCC so the total amount of scholarship monies generated nationally by the "30 for 30 Campaign" can be tracked and the results reported.
NYCC's "Reunions '93 Weekend" (October 1-3) will also commemorate the state's licensure anniversary by establishing a Chiropractic Pioneers Society to recognize all doctors who practiced in New York prior to 1963, or in any state prior to licensure.
All doctors who practiced prior to licensure are invited to send NYCC a letter describing what life was like for the unlicensed chiropractor. They will be organized and preserved in the NYCC Museum of Chiropractic for use by researchers and students. Submissions should be typed, double-spaced, and include your name, the state where you practiced prior to licensure, your dates of graduation and licensure, and a description of your experiences.
The pioneering doctors who made licensure a reality remind us of the continuing fight we face today: insurance equality, national health care reform, and standards of care.
