The Australian Spinal Research Foundation (ASRF) Nominates First Life Members

By Editorial Staff
The board of governors of the Australian Spinal Research Foundation (ASRF) announced its first life memberships to Professor John Waterson and Dr. Douglas Winter. The life memberships were awarded at the ASRF's September 20, 1990 meeting in appreciation of their exceptional level of support for ASRF since its inception 14 years ago.

Professor John Waterson

Professor Waterson has been chairman of the ASRF's research committee since the foundation was established. He is currently a member of the board of governors of ASRF.

Professor Waterson has had a distinguished career in dentistry and is a strong supporter of chiropractic. He has served as a lecturer, professor, and dean in the faculties of dental science at the University of Melbourne and Western Australia. He has been a senior consultant and member of the board of dental hospitals and is a member and office holder of numerous Australian Dental Association committees. He has served on the Australian Dental Examining Council and is an inaugural fellow in the Australian College of Dental Surgeons.

Professor Waterson has an extensive record of published research.

Dr. John Hinwood, president of the ASRF describes Professor Waterson as a man of "absolute integrity and unyielding adherence to strong principles." Dr. Hinwood feels that Professor Waterson's advise to the board on research and other policy matters has provided a stability that was much needed: "Over the years he has provide a strength and point of reference for many of us during some difficult times."

Dr. Douglas Winter

Dr. Winter was one of the founders of ASRF in 1976. He served 13 years on the board, 7 of them as president; he retired from the board in 1989.

Dr. Winter has seen ASRF "grow from an idea to a functioning, integral part of the chiropractic profession."

On October 2, 1988, Dr. Winter was presented with an Award of Honour in recognition of his guidance and outstanding contribution to ASRF and the chiropractic profession.

Dr. Winter has served in an executive capacity for numerous chiropractic associations and was president of the Australian Chiropractors' Association from 1981-1983.

Dr. Hinwood says, "Dr. Winter has been central to the creation and continued existence of ASRF. In his roles he brought an inspirational spirit that converted the dreams to reality, yet never lost touch of the dream."

The board of governors of ASRF expresses their "deepest appreciation for the contribution of time, energy, and spirit given by Professor Waterson and Dr. Winter," on behalf of its members and the chiropractic profession.
