Just Do It: 2007 Sports & Pediatrics Symposium

By Editorial Staff

Doctors of chiropractic will join athletic trainers at the Nike World Campus in Beaverton, Ore., from Aug. 3-5 at the 2007 Sports & Pediatrics Symposium. Partnering to present the event are the ACA Sports Council, the ACA Pediatrics Council and the Oregon Athletic Trainers' Society.

The event is being heralded as a landmark for the chiropractic profession, as it is rare that outside events are held on the Nike campus.

"This symposium is a wonderful opportunity for chiropractors to keep up with the latest knowledge in the treatment and management of children and young athletes," commented Elise Hewitt, DC, president of the ACA Council on Pediatrics.

The symposium will be held at the Tiger Woods Center, a state-of-the-art educational facility normally used exclusively by Nike. It will feature numerous joint sessions focusing on management of the school-age athlete. Lectures by prominent leaders in the chiropractic sports and pediatrics specialties will address topics such as the pediatric knee, sports nutrition and supplementation for the student athlete, and how to manage concussions and other injuries. Scheduled topics/speakers for the joint sessions include the following:

  • "Athletic Footwear Biomechanical Prescription" - Ted Forcum, DC, DACBSP; 2007 U.S. Pan American Chiropractor, Past PGA Tour Chiropractor.
  • "Pediatric Knee" - Tom Hyde, DC, DACBSP; 1987 U.S. Pan American Team Chiropractor.
  • "Concussion: Updated Management & Return to Play" - Sherri LaShomb, DC, ATC; 2006 Pro Lacrosse ATC of the Year.
  • "Injuries in Youth Soccer"- Phil Santiago, DC, DACBSP; 1992 U.S. Olympic Team Chiropractor.

In addition to the joint sessions, breakout sessions will allow symposium attendees to attend more specialty-specific lectures, based on their chosen track. Scheduled topics/speakers for the Sports Council breakout session include "Pre-Participation Physical - Workshop," by Bill Bonsall, DC, DACBSP; "Anatomy Trains - Solve the Myofascial Mystery," by Ed Feinberg, DC, DACBSP; "Hamstring Injuries: Myotherapy - Hands On," by Justin Whitaker, DC; and "Body-Friendly Golf Swing," by Darcy Dill, DC.
