Dr. Frank Hideg Honored for Service to NBCE

During the annual meeting of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE), held in St. Louis in May, Frank G. Hideg Jr., DC, received the Paul M.

Tullio Award for Dedicated Service. Dr. Hideg, who served on the NBCE board of directors for 30 years, including six years as president, chose not to seek re-election this year.

As president (1992-98), Dr. Hideg was the driving force behind the development and implementation of the Part IV Practical Examination, which was administered for the first time in 1996. During his career, he also served the NBCE as vice president (1988-91), chairman (1999-2004 and 2005-06) and District II director (1977-2007), and was a state delegate to the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards (FCLB), serving as FCLB vice president (1978-79) and president (1979-80). Dr. Hideg has served as vice president of the Kentucky Board of Chiropractic Examiners since 1975.

The Paul M. Tullio Award honors a chiropractic leader committed to advancing testing, licensure and legislation for the profession. Dr. Tullio served as board chair from 1988-99 and subsequently as president until his passing in 2000. A longtime district director of the FCLB, he received the George A. Arvidson Award for Meritorious Service in 1996 - an honor he shared that year with his closest friend, Dr. Hideg.

Chiropractic Featured on NPR

In May 2007, National Public Radio (NPR) featured chiropractic care during its weekly health segment. Dr. Mark Pfefer, director of research at Cleveland Chiropractic College Kansas City (CCCKC) and Dr. Gail Boyer, president of the Kansas Chiropractic Association, discussed the changes in chiropractic care and its increasing acceptance in the medical community.

Dr. Pfefer has worked tirelessly to promote the chiropractic profession, including seeking out ways to access the public directly. He says the success of the radio show is just the beginning of his efforts to reach out to consumers.

"I feel that we need greater community awareness of chiropractic and the college and want to do my part in getting the word out," Dr. Pfefer said. "We need examples of professional, ethical chiropractors who are working as a part of the health care system to speak out about the effectiveness, cost-savings and other benefits of chiropractic care."

Public acceptance of chiropractic is on the rise, and the open discussion of chiropractic care on NPR's weekly health segment illustrates that growing interest and acceptance, according to Dr. Cheryl Hawk, vice president of research and scholarship at the Cleveland Chiropractic Research Center. "We've had several calls from potential patients for our study as a result," she said. "But it certainly [has] had much broader positive effects for Cleveland [Chiropractic College] and chiropractic."

Two Chiropractors of the Year in Michigan

The newly merged Michigan Association of Chiropractors (MAC) has awarded the Chiropractor of the Year award to two doctors - Drs. Christophe Dean and Thomas Klapp, who were honored for their outstanding commitment and leadership in the advancement of chiropractic in Michigan.

The dual award marks the recent successful merger of the Michigan Chiropractic Association (MCA) and the Michigan Chiropractic Society (MCS).

"This is the first time two chiropractors have ever shared this honor," said MAC President Dr. Kirk Steketee. "Both of these doctors put a lot of hard work into the MCA/MCS merger and they deserved to be recognized. This is a great indication that the merger has been an amazing success."

Dr. Dean, a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic, has been a chiropractor since 1975. He has served on the Michigan Chiropractic Council (MCC) board of directors and was elected MCC's president in 2004. Dr. Klapp graduated cum laude from Life Chiropractic College in 1979. He served as MCA president before the merger and now serves as MAC chairman. This is the third time he has been honored with the Chiropractor of the Year award.
