Earl L. Wiley, DC, chairman and at-large director of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE), passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007.
He is survived by his wife, LaVerne, five daughters and two sons.
Vernon R. Temple, DC, president of the NBCE, remembered Dr. Wiley: "We are deeply saddened by the death of our friend and colleague. Earl brought so much of himself to the National Board: his thoughtful insight, his sense of purpose, and his passion for chiropractic. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife, LaVerne, and to all of his family. We will so dearly miss him."
Dr. Wiley graduated from Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC) (now Southern California University of Health Sciences) in 1980 and started his own private practice in Los Angeles. He then went on to work as clinic director at the Affordable Chiropractic Clinic in Cincinnati from 1992-1993. From 1993-1997, he worked at Avondale Family Chiropractic, and from 1997 until his death he worked at West End Chiropractic Clinic.
Dr. Wiley was active in chiropractic leadership. In May 2007, he was elected to serve as chairman of the board for the NBCE Board of Directors, stepping up from his previous position as director-at-large, a position he had held since 2006. He was a voice for change in the NBCE and is credited with casting the deciding vote to elect the reform candidates during the historic 2006 annual meeting. This was his first official act after being elected as director-at-large.
He had also recently finished a six-year term as president of the Ohio State Chiropractic Board. Previously, he served as district director of the Southwest Ohio Chiropractic Society from 2000 to 2002, and vice president of the American Black Chiropractic Association (ABCA) from 1986 to 1989.
Dr. Wiley also had several years of teaching experience. From 1974-1975, he taught health education and medical terminology at Opportunities Industrialization Center in Los Angeles; from 1983-1984, he supervised and taught interns at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic; and from 1988-1989, he taught health education and GED preparatory classes at Inglewood Community Adult School in Inglewood, Calif.
In addition to being active in his church, Dr. Wiley enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including travel, camping and whitewater rafting. He had also served as a ringside judge for the U.S. Amateur Boxing Association.
Services were held at New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Cincinnati on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
