Sherman Issues Call for Abstracts
From Oct. 17-19, 2008, Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic will host the fifth annual International Research and Philosophy Symposium (IRAPS).The deadline to submit abstracts on the topic of vertebral subluxation is April 30. Abstracts should be 500 to 1,000 words and should be submitted electronically along with the author's current curriculum vitae. Abstracts should be double-spaced and should include a title, introduction, discussion, conclusion and complete references.
According to the college, the objective of IRAPS 2008 is to "seek new insight into the core concept of vertebral subluxation." Papers can relate to scientific inquiry or topics that address the art and philosophy of the vertebral subluxation. Possible subtopics include the following:
- detection and correction of vertebral subluxation (VS);
- economic impact of VS;
- historical, political and sociological impact of VS;
- reasoning and logic surrounding VS;
- evidence and benefits of VS correction;
- professional implications and lifestyle of VS-centered practice; and
- supporting clinical findings related to VS.
"The profession is faced with an ethical imperative to shift its research focus to the vertebral subluxation," said Sherman director of research Ralph Boone, PhD, DC. "Engagement in relevant research is essential if the body of knowledge is to increase."

Dr. Laura Weeks Elected to COA
In other Sherman College news, Laura Chadwick Weeks, DC, vice president for planning, assessment and enrollment services, has been elected to the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Chiropractic Education (COA/CCE). Dr. Weeks was elected as the commission's CCE accredited program employee representative; her three-year term began on Jan. 20, 2008.
A 1990 graduate of Sherman, Dr. Weeks previously served on the COA executive committee as chair (2003-2006) and as a commission member from 2000-2003 and 2006-2007. Before being appointed vice president for planning, assessment and enrollment at Sherman, she served the college as vice president for academic affairs and as dean of chiropractic health services.
"We are pleased to have one of our own alumni and administrators recognized and included on this distinguished committee," said Jon Schwartzbauer, DC, president of Sherman College. "Dr. Weeks' election to this post is a reflection of her commitment and service to the chiropractic profession, and her dedication to promoting excellence in chiropractic education."
Logan Receives $500,000 Donation From Standard Process
Standard Process Inc. recently announced that it is donating $500,000 to name the $3.5 million student center currently under construction at Logan College of Chiropractic. The 6,500 square-foot center is expected to be completed this summer.
"I've been impressed with the major improvements on the Logan campus over the past several years," said Charles DuBois, president of the Wisconsin-based whole-food supplement manufacturer. "So I'm excited about this opportunity to attach [our] name to Logan's new student center, which will be a fun, lively and energetic place for students to gather. I also see this gift as a way ... to thank today's students as they study chiropractic and whole-food nutrition."
