A Resolution to Recognize National Chiropractic Health Month
Rep. Leonard Boswell (D-Iowa) recently introduced House Resolution 1523, which would "observe the contributions of the chiropractic profession and recognize National Chiropractic Health Month" in the House of Representatives.
October is National Chiropractic Health Month, sponsored by the ACA, and this year's theme is a particularly important one considering the current obesity crisis in the United States: "Why Weight - Get Healthy!" Activities planned during the month in celebration of NCHM will focus on how chiropractic plays an important role in both preventing and managing obesity.
"Chiropractic care provides patients with a path to overall wellness through natural approaches to health issues, including weight management," said ACA President Dr. Rick McMichael, commenting on this year's theme and the House resolution. "We have a growing list of congressional members who strongly support the good work that doctors of chiropractic do to help patients lead healthier lives, naturally. We very much appreciate their recognition and support."

NHSU Partners With School for Health and Wellness Event
Northwestern Health Sciences University recently partnered with Saint Agnes School, a K-12 school in nearby St. Agnes, Minn, to host the second annual Saint Agnes School Health and Wellness Exams, Pre-Participation Physicals and Combine. The event, part of a collaboration that began in 2008 courtesy of NHSU Associate Professor Dr. John Williams, gives student athletes at St. Agnes the opportunity to receive chiropractic services and NHSU students the opportunity to work with athletes on and off the field.
"This way, the students and doctors have time to address past injuries," Dr. Williams said, "and work with the kids, coaches, parents and family doctors ahead of the season and let them understand their limitations if there are any."
The Health and Wellness Exams, Pre-Participation Physical and Combine includes several elements, such as overall health assessments and tests to gauge athletic strength and ability. Students can rate themselves nationally based on test results, and medals and scholarship money are also available for students excelling both at the combine and in the classroom. This year's event was held at St. Agnes and included students from St. Agnes and St. Croix Lutheran.
Logan Alumni Appointed to Positions at Health Centers
Drs. Jennifer Kane, Aimee Jokerst and Patricia Estrada have been appointed full-time clinicians at Logan College of Chiropractic health centers. Dr. Kane will work at Logan's St. Peter's Health Center; Dr. Jokerst at Logan's Southroads Health Center, and Dr. Estrada at the college's Yorkshire Health Center.
Dr. Kane has served as a part-time clinician at Logan's on-campus student health center since 2004. She graduated from Logan in April 2001. Dr. Jokerst, an August 1997 Logan graduate , has operated her own practice for more than 13 years and been named one of Jefferson City, Mo.'s top chiropractors. And Dr. Estrada worked in Costa Rica following her graduation from Logan (August 1999), working for Quiropractica Mundial as an associate in one of its high-volume chiropractic clinics, and then returned to the U.S., opening a practice in St. Louis in 2003.
CHIRO Study Wins Outstanding Paper Award
The Bishop, et al., "Chiropractic Hospital-based Interventions Research Outcomes (CHIRO) Study: A Randomized Controlled Trial on the Effectiveness of Clinical Practice Guidelines in the Medical and Chiropractic Management of Acute Mechanical Lower Back Pain," has been selected by The Spine Journal to receive the 2010 Outstanding Paper Award for Medical & Interventional Science. The paper will be published in an upcoming issue of the journal, and Dr. Bishop has been asked to present the paper at the North American Spine Society's 25th Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla., in October.
