CCE Announces New President
The Council on Chiropractic Education has appointed Tom Benberg, EdD, council president / CEO. Benberg joins the CCE after 17 years of service as senior vice president and chief of staff for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Academic Appointments at the University of Bridgeport
David Wickes, MA, DC, is the new dean of the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic, one of several appointments announced by the college recently. Dr. Wickes previously served as chief academic officer at National University of Health Sciences and the University of Western States. Active within the profession, Dr. Wickes' resume also features participation with the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, World Federation of Chiropractic, National Board of Chiropractic Examiners and American Chiropractic Association, among others.
Other recent Bridgeport appointees: Paul Sherman, DC, as UBCC coordinator of academic affairs; and Denise Gagne-Kurpiewski as director of educational assessment and planning for the university's Division of Health Sciences.
Logan College Goes Online With Select Undergrad Courses
Beginning this month, Logan College of Chiropractic / University Programs is offering select accelerated undergraduate sciences courses in an online format. Courses available online as part of the college's Accelerated Science Program, which allows undergraduate students the chance to complete two terms of coursework within a single academic term, include general and organic chemistry, physics, human biology (II) and algebra. The new online offerings add to the college's Web-based learning options, which currently include the Master of Science in Sports Science and Rehabilitation (hybrid/online format) and Master of Science in Nutrition and Human Performance (completely online).
"Online education has proven itself [to be] a viable forum for delivering content beyond the classroom," said Dr. Elizabeth Goodman, Logan dean of university programs. "Besides the convenience of being able to study from anywhere, there is Internet access, online education at Logan promotes lifelong learning. Students in Logan's University Programs literally have global access to their education."
Life University Names New Chair of Board of Trustees
At its quarterly board meeting in mid-July, the Life University Board of Trustees elected Deborah Pogrelis, DC, chairperson of the board, succeeding Shawn Ferguson, DC, board chair since 2010. Dr. Pogrelis, who previously served as chief of staff for the university's clinics and dean of the College of Chiropractic, continues her longtime service to Life with her appointment as dean. In fact, Dr. Pogrelis entered chiropractic school in 1975 as a member of the university's very first class.
"There is an incredible amount of enthusiasm among the Board of Trustees [following] the appointment of Deb Pogrelis," said Guy Riekeman, DC, Life University president, in the wake of Dr. Pogrelis' election. "Shawn Ferguson has shown exemplary leadership over the past two years as the university completed two phases of our 2020 Vision. Given Pogrelis' history with Life, she is the perfect person to lead us into phase three and beyond."
Canadian DC Named Member of Prestigious Order of Canada
Canadian Chiropractic Association Director of Research Programs and Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association Editor, Dr. Alan Gotlib, recently received the prestigious Order of Canada. Dr. Gotlib is now a Member of the Order of Canada, recognizing his achievements in the health care field. Governor General David Johnston announced the appointment on June 29 – one of 70 such awards bestowed that day. The complete list of award recipients is available online at www.gg.ca/honours.
Dr. Gotlib's contributions to chiropractic and health care over the past two-plus decades include facilitating the profession's university-based research chairs and professorships in Canada, as well as the Consortium of Canadian Chiropractic Research Centres. Currently, he is president of the Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation.
In addition to his latest honor as a Member of the Order of Canada, Dr. Gotlib is the recipient of several of the Canadian chiropractic profession's highest honors, including the Canadian Chiropractic Association Medal of Merit, the Ontario Chiropractic Association's Chiropractor of the Year award; and the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) Homewood Professorship.
Ms. Alison Dantas, whose career achievements include service as executive director of the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors and the Association of Ontario Midwives, is the new executive director of the Canadian Chiropractic Association. Dantas, who assumed the position effective Sept. 4, replaces outgoing ED Jim Duncan, who announced his retirement earlier this year after a decade of service to the CCA.
Texas Chiropractic College Honors Its Veterans
The lobby of the Texas Chiropractic College (TCC) Moody Health Center now features a plaque honoring the college's current veterans, including Richard W. Guillory Jr. (Marines) and Wayne Johnson (Air Force), both student interns at the health center. On July 3, Guillory and Johnson hung the plaque, which also honors, among others, Joanna Little (Navy), Clint Minter (Navy), Carlos DeLeon (Army), Curtis Dewey (Marines), Richard W. Guillory, Jr. (Marines), Wayne Johnson (Air Force), Joe Surace (Marines) and Sue Arnold (Army).
