NBCE Launches Computer-Based Testing Era

The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners successfully launched computer-based testing during the Sept. 12-13 administration of the Part 1 examination at Life University.

Prior to the fall 2014 exam, all NBCE written exams (Parts 1-3) had been administered in paper-and-pencil format only.

The new exam protocol allows each student being tested to connect via a secure Internet connection to a testing environment hosted by the NBCE. According to the board, with the protocol now in place, it can be replicated at other campus test sites moving forward.

"For well over 10 years, NBCE has periodically evaluated the feasibility and advisability of delivering our exams on computer," said Dr. Donna Craft, board president. "While it has been feasible, the cost, security, and convenience of administering paper-and-pencil exams on campus could not be matched by CBT. Recent advancements in technology enabled us to develop a unique CBT platform that could solve the advisability concerns. Our goals were to keep the exam administration on campus as a convenience to students, to maintain exam security, and to still have an affordable exam. We have met those goals."

California Chiropractors Get Expanded DOT Exam Privileges

Governor Jerry Brown has signed AB 2143, legislation that gives California doctors of chiropractic the authority to perform complete Department of Transportation physical examinations on DOT drivers. Authored by Calif. Assemblyman Das Williams (D-Santa Barbara) and supported by the California Chiropractic Association, Southern California University of Health Sciences and Palmer College of Chiropractic - West, AB 2143 passed and was signed into law with an urgency clause, meaning it has already taken effect.

"For many years, chiropractic doctors have been performing physical examinations on DOT drivers," commented Dr. Ken Winer, CCA chair of government affairs. "However, there had been limitations on what could be done by the doctor including the dipstick portion of the exam, which had already been within the scope of chiropractic. This constraint required the hardworking DOT drivers to leave the chiropractor's office and go to a medical provider or outside laboratory to complete the exam, which placed an unnecessary time and financial burden [on] DOT drivers."

New Jeff Hays Documentary

Remember "Doctored," the ground-breaking 2012 health care documentary about chiropractic care, the AMA's "contain and eliminate" strategy, and the viability of nondrug, conservative care in today's health care marketplace? Well, producer Jeff Hays, has announced release dates for his latest project, "Bought."

According to Hays in a September email received as we went to press with this issue, the film was set to be released on Sept. 26 and is available exclusively for online streaming and downloading until Nov. 10.

After Nov. 10, said Hays: "The official 'Bought' theatrical release will take place in Los Angeles on November 11th, followed by New York on November 13th and Salt Lake City on November 14th. Following the official theatrical release, [the film] will be made available for hopefully thousands of additional public theatrical screenings via Tugg.com for the public to be able to view the film in theater."

Hays added that DVD copies are also in the works, one of several promotional options to help your patients hear the film's important message. For additional information about "Bought," visit the movie's official online site.
