A Celebration of the State of Chiropractic

As reported in our Jan. 1, 2011 issue, Dr. Kate Rufolo was elected president of the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (COCSA) at the association's annual convention in Scottsdale, Ariz., in November.

With our focus on Dr. Rufolo becoming the first female president of COCSA and only the second woman to head a national chiropractic association in the history of the profession, we left complete details of the association's annual event for this issue.

Let's start by introducing the COCSA board of directors for 2011. Joining Dr. Rufolo on the board are the following:

  • 1st Vice President: Dr. David Kassmeier
  • 2nd Vice President: Dr. Ken Hughes
  • Treasurer: Dr. John LaMonica
  • Secretary: Dr. Marty Freihaut
  • District 1 Director: Dr. Thomas Augat
  • District 2 Director: Kris Dowell
  • District 3 Director: Dr. Philip Day
  • District 4 Director: Dr. John Rogers
  • District 5 Director: Bill Howe
  • Exec. Director at Large: Julie Connolly
  • Past President: Dr. Jeff Fedorko

CCGPP/COCSA representatives for 2011 include the following:

  • District 1: Dr. James McDaniels
  • District 2: Dr. David Radford
  • District 3: Dr. Jay Greenstein
  • District 4: Dr. Rob Hasse
  • District 5: Dr. Wayne Whalen

The 2010 conference, which featured educational presentations, legislative and political updates, and networking opportunities, included a day-one welcome dinner and speech by conference keynote speaker Richard Gephardt, former House Majority Leader and two-time presidential candidate. Attendees also heard updates from chiropractic organizations including the American Chiropractic Association, International Chiropractors Association, Council on Chiropractic Guidelines and Practice Parameters and the Chiropractic Summit, many of whom also held meetings during the conference.

Overall, 44 state chiropractic associations were represented by their respective executive directors in Scottsdale, along with volunteer leaders, key leaders from the profession and more than 30 corporate partners. For more information on the 2010 COCSA meeting/conference, visit www.cocsa.org.

Illinois Chiropractic Society Names Its DC of the Year

The Illinois Chiropractic Society (ICS) has named Dr. Douglas Matzner Chiropractic Physician of the Year. The society presented Dr. Matzner with the award at its annual convention in Chicago late last year. A 1981 graduate of National College of Chiropractic (now National University of Health Sciences) in Lombard, Ill., Dr. Matzner is the former president (2003-2004) of the ICS and practices in Champaign, Ill.
