F4CP Attends historic Pain Congress
The Academy of Integrative Pain Management hosted the first-ever Integrative Pain Care Policy Congress late last year, and the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (F4CP) made a strong showing to highlight the chiropractic profession's value in conservative, drug-free pain management. Overall, more than 50 organizations representing pain management providers attended the congress.
"With input and participation of providers, insurers, researchers, policymakers and policy experts, media, and consumers, this Congress had meaningful and open discussion that led to a consensus regarding the definition of comprehensive integrative pain management," said Dr. Gerard Clum, foundation representative at the event. That agreed-upon definition is as follows:
"Comprehensive integrative pain management includes biomedical, psychosocial, complementary health, and spiritual care. It is person-centered and focuses on maximizing function and wellness. Care plans are developed through a shared decision-making model that reflects the available evidence regarding optimal clinical practice and the person's goals and values."
New Member of ACA Sports Council HOF
Dr. Ira Shapiro is the 11th inductee into the American Chiropractic Association Sports Council's Hall of Fame, elected by a committee of his peers and current HOF members. Dr. Shapiro is the first DC to serve on the medical staffs of two U.S. Olympic teams: the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece, and 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. He has also worked as an attending physician at various national and international athletic competitions / events.
"Dr. Shapiro was a unanimous selection," commented Dr. Tom Hyde, a 2001 HOF inductee. "[His] selfless dedication to the betterment of the profession and the many athletes he treated on the local, national, and international stage made him an extremely worthy recipient and the first honoree since 2013."
SCU Announces Innovative Programs
Southern California University of Health Sciences is launching four innovative hybrid / online programs as part of its expanding School of Professional Studies:
Clinical Genomics and Precision Medicine for Healthcare Professionals: A six-month genetic training curriculum focused on new sequencing technologies, artificial intelligence in healthcare, gene editing, "citizen scientist gene hacking," ethical issues, and implications on public health.
Yoga Foundations for Healthcare Professionals: "A rigorous introduction to how yoga can be utilized by healthcare professionals – on and off the mat." A 200-hour hybrid program.
Clinical Nutrition for Healthcare Professionals: Individual online courses that fulfill hours required for the Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) credential and can be completed at one's own pace.
Health Coaching for Healthcare Professionals: A seven-month program of online courses and one on-campus weekend intensive.
According to SCU President Dr. John Scaringe, the programs are in line with the university's goal "to transform health and redefine healthcare education by providing students and healthcare practitioners with emerging integrative, interprofessional educational opportunities that prepare them to be leaders in the healthcare system of the future."
NBCE Testing Director Retires
National Board of Chiropractic Examiners Director of Practical Testing and Research, Dr. Paul Townsend, has retired from the NBCE effective Dec. 31, 2017. Dr. Townsend joined the NBCE in 1976 as a Part II Test Committee participant, became a private contract consultant in 1979, and eventually played an instrumental role in the development of the board's Part IV examination.
"I am excited to know that the NBCE Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Andy Gow, a rising star at the NBCE, to be the new Director of Practical Testing," said Dr. Townsend. "Under [his] leadership, I am confident that Part IV will continue to be the benchmark for professional licensure testing in the health occupations."
NBCE Announces Scholarship Winners
In other NBCE news, the board announced the winners of its second annual scholarship competition, with winners receiving $2,000 apiece. Entrants submitted essays on humanities topics focused on or relating to chiropractic care.
