Dr. Paul Katz, medical director for MCH and professor of medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, worked with NYCC for over a year to create the clinic, following a pilot project by college clinician and researcher J. Donald Dishman, DC, which demonstrated the efficacy of chiropractic for treating chronic illness.
According to the school, student response to the chiropractic clinic has been "overwhelmingly positive." As a result, NYCC and MCH have agreed to commit additional time for patient visits to the clinic and develop several new research projects. NYCC Assistant Professor Paul Dougherty, DC, who specializes in treating back pain in elderly populations, is directing the chiropractic treatment program at the clinic.
TCC Professor Appointed Visiting Scholar
An associate professor of physiology at Texas Chiropractic College (TCC) has been appointed a visiting scholar in biology at the University of Texas at Austin. Susan Grigsby, PhD, will work with UT physiology teacher Dr. Dee Silverthorn, learning new laboratory exercises in physiology and how better to provide an active learning environment. Dr. Grigsby will continue to teach at TCC.
"It is my hope and goal that this experience will lead to improved opportunities on the TCC campus for all faculty who wish to use active learning techniques in their classes," Dr. Grigsby said, adding that she became inspired after hearing Dr. Silverthorn, the author of Human Physiology and editor for the American Physiological Society journal Advances in Physiology Education, present at a meeting sponsored by physiology and biology publishers. "[Dr. Silverthorn] is not only a capable author, but also a gifted teacher."
Dr. Silverthorn created the visiting scholar position specifically so Dr. Grigsby would have the opportunity to "learn at her feet."
DC Named to Georgia Board of Chiropractic Examiners
Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes recently announced the appointment of Patrick Sallarulo, DC, to the Georgia Board of Chiropractic Examiners (GBCE) for a 5-year term. The six-member GBCE regulates 4,500 licensed DCs in the state to "protect, promote and preserve the public health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Georgia."
"Dr. Sallarulo is the epitome of what a chiropractor should be," commented GBCE President Davis Kinney, DC. "He is a man of great integrity and has done a tremendous job promoting the advancement of patient care."
At the 2002 Georgia Chiropractic Association Fall Convention, Sallarulo was named "Chiropractor of the Year." He currently serves as GCA vice chairman and has been an active member on six of its committees. At the convention, Dr. Eric Krohne, GCA executive director, expressed praise for Dr. Sallarulo's "unselfish dedication to his profession and his community."
Three Chiropractic Insurers Downgraded by A.M. Best
A.M. Best recently downgraded the financial strength rating of Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company (MLMIC) from A- (excellent) to B++ (very good). The downgrade is based on the consolidated operating performance and financial condition of the MLMIC Group and its subsidiaries, Princeton Insurance Company, OHIC Insurance Company and Professional Liability Insurance Company of America.
Additionally, the insurance rating organization has independently downgraded the financial strength Princeton Insurance and OHIC: Princeton has been lowered from B+ (very good) to B (fair), and OHIC has dropped from A- to B++.
