On November 13th, over 100 DCs will offer complimentary examinations and x-rays (if necessary) in exchange for a suggested donation of $10 to "A Gift from the Heart," a nonprofit charity benefiting children with cardiac defects.
Fifty DCs from the New York State Chiropractic Association, and the New York Chiropractic Council are currently involved in the program to benefit the children, while promoting chiropractic, and their practices.
The event is being publicized in some 40 local publications and over radio and television, including a direct mail campaign going to 50,000 individuals and businesses.
The program's Executive Director D. Michael Lentin said Long Island has never seen a program like this. "We welcome more chiropractors to become involved," he said.

NYSCA Holds Joint Convention with American Back Society
The New York State Chiropractic Association (NYSCA) held its annual convention in May in conjunction with the American Back Society's (ABS) spring symposium in Buffalo, New York (see Dr. Cooperstein's article in the August 13th issue of "DC" for a detailed report of the ABS symposium). The convention attracted hundreds of health care professionals from a variety of disciplines, including medicine, physical therapy, and chiropractic.
The theme was "The Industrial Back" and a wide variety of classes and intensive workshops dealing with industrial issues were offered. The educational program was sponsored by New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) and the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Representatives of the New York State Workers' Compensation Board, including Commissioner Barbara Patton, were on hand.
NYSCA's keynote speaker was Dr. Jerome F. McAndrews, the ACA's vice president of professional affairs. He commented on the significance of the joint NYSCA/ABS event by mentioning that in 1980 when he tried to organize a multidisciplinary event, physicians weren't interested. Dr. McAndrews talk also focused on national health care reform, managed competition, and managed care.
During its convention, NYSCA elected new executive officers and filled several director seats on its Board of Directors. Dr. Dale Cohen was elected president, succeeding Dr. Gil Allen. Dr. Cohen, a 1980 Logan graduate, has had many leadership roles in the association over the years, including vice president, treasurer, and director at the board level. He has also served as long-term chairman of the NYSCA Medicare Committee. Last year he was appointed to the Physician Advisory Committee, established at the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Medicare-Physician Relationships, a federal committee that reports to the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Dr. Cohen is also chairman of the Health Fairs committee, and was primarily responsible for the renovation of the NYSCA Health Fair display booth at the New York State Fair.
Dr. Leonard Venezia was elected vice president. He has served as a member of the NYSCA Board of Directors the last three years. Dr. Kenneth Lux was elected secretary, and Dr. Stephen Zajac was elected treasurer. Doctors elected to the Board of Directors include Todd Eglow, James Ian-Diorio, James Kaufman, Author Kojes, Lloyd Kupferman, James Lambert, and John Weisberg.
NYSCA presented the Earnest G. Napolitano award to Dr. Robert Crocker Jr., at the convention. The Napolitano award is the association's highest honor, and is presented for recognition of selfless contributions to the association and the profession.
Dr. Crocker has been involved with NYSCA for more than a decade. He recently completed his second term as a member of the Board of Directors. For many years he served on the Rules and Revisions Committee, which undertook in 1988 the task of revising and updating the NYSCA constitution and bylaws. He has also participated on several important committees including legislation, membership, and ethics, and is responsible for publishing the district newsletter. At the district level, he has held several positions, including president and delegate, and was recently recognized by his peers for his dedication.
The Ernest Napolitano award is the namesake of the president of New York Chiropractic College from 1959-1985. Internationally renowned in the chiropractic profession, Dr. Napolitano exemplified the dedication and service that is acknowledged by this award. It is the only award presented by NYSCA that carries a $1,000 donation in the recipient's name to the Chiropractic Education Foundation of New York (CEFNY), which awards several scholarships each year to New York residents attending chiropractic colleges. Daniel Mack Jr., an NYCC student, is this year's recipient of the Ernest G. Napolitano Fellowship.
DCs Treat at World University Games
On July 6-18, 25 New York DCs volunteered their services at the World University Games, where primary care chiropractic treatment was made available to over 5000 athletes and officials from over 120 countries. The chiropractic clinic was located in the heart of the athlete's village on the second floor of the World Games medical complex.
For 70 years the World University Games have showcased the talents of athletes from around the world, including such athletic greats as former Boston Celtic great Larry Bird, and Olympic gold medalists Greg Louganis and Nadia Comaneci. The 1993 Games were attended by some half million spectators, and televised nationally.

Chiro Philanthropist Dr. William Harris Lectures at NYCCWilliam M. Harris, DC, acclaimed chiropractic philanthropist, recently lectured at the NYCC campus to several large groups of students and faculty.
Dr. Harris has been the recipient of many honors in the past: "Humanitarian of the Year" by the Georgia Chiropractic Association in 1987; "Chiropractor of the Year" by the Parker Chiropractic Research Foundation in 1952, and an honorary Doctorate of Science degree from Trinity University of Chicago in 1949. Dr. Harris was recently named to the Texas Chiropractic College Hall of Fame for his continuous years of commitment to the profession. There have been only seven chiropractors to receive this Hall of Fame recognition at Texas Chiropractic College.
Dr. Harris formed the Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Education (FACE) 14 years ago. This nonprofit foundation has contributed over $2,700,000 to chiropractic colleges and chiropractic research making Dr. Harris the largest single contributor to the profession.
ACA's Mark W. Goodin Speaks at NYCC August Commencement
Mark W. Goodin, the legislative strategist for the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), delivered the commencement address at NYCC's August 1, 1993 commencement ceremony.
Mr. Goodin is a former award-winning newspaper reporter and editor, and has served in many senior political and governmental positions. He began his political career as press secretary to U.S. Senator Strom Thurman and was appointed chief spokesman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. As Director of Communications for the national GOP, he was credited with reshaping the Republican National Committee's communications strategy. Previously the deputy press secretary for the 1988 Bush presidential campaign, Mr. Goodin is presently the founder and president of his own communication's firm.
Sports Injuries Club Sponsors Dr. Jack Barnathan
NYCC's Student Council on Sports Injuries and Human Performance hosted Dr. Jack Barnathan at the Seneca Falls campus. A 1984 graduate of NYCC, Dr. Barnathan was invited to address the student body on "The International Fitness Movement and Chiropractic's Unique Opportunity."
Dr. Barnathan is presently the chairman of the ICA Council on Sports Fitness and Sports Health Science, and was recently honored as ICA's "Sports Chiropractor of the Year." He has worked directly with the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the International Federation of Bodybuilding, and most recently successfully coordinated the First Annual ICA Chiropractic Symposium held in conjunction with the 1993 Arnold Schwarzenegger Bodybuilding Classic.
Bloomfield College Students Awarded NYCC Scholarships
Three students from Bloomfield College in New Jersey were awarded $1,000 scholarships from NYCC at an awards ceremony honoring students in the college's pre-chiropractic program.
The pre-chiropractic program entitles students to a baccalaureate degree from Bloomfield College after their first year of study at NYCC. Bloomfield College has both a three and four-year pre-chiropractic program. The four-year program is designed to accommodate students who want to practice in states where a full bachelors degree is required before enrollment into a chiropractic college.
NYCC's 11th Annual Run Benefits Kentuckiana Children's Center
NYCC's 11th Annual 5K Run for Health raised approximately $1,200 to benefit the Kentuckiana Children's Center. Prize money and medals were awarded to the top male and female finishers. The race was followed by a chiropractic health fair at the college's athletic center.
The top three male finishers were Dominic Coluse, Peter Gavin, and Tim Otis. The top female finishers were Jennifer Shaver, Amy Wagner, and Julie Hilson. In the 60-plus age group, first place winners were Joe Conrad and Marsha Tilson. The top male student finishers were Dom Wallace, John Harrington, and Chris Amato. The female winners were Trish Selia, Crystal Joseph, and Laura Fernandez. First place winner in the chiropractic doctor category was Dr. Ed Sullivan.
Gerald Brassard, DC Speaks to NYCC Students
On June 23rd, Dr. Gerald Brassard spoke to students in the practice management class at NYCC on the topic of successfully starting a practice. Originally from New Hampshire, Dr. Brassard began practice in 1949 in Beaumont, Texas. Once a chairman of Municipal Hospital in Beaumont, he also served as city mayor pro-temp. An originator of the legislative commission, Dr. Brassard helped to institute negotiations of medicare insurance coverage in chiropractic. Dr. Brassard stressed the importance of serving the patient, and pursuing community involvement.
