This misuse occurs in several ways:
-- Institutions announcing performance levels on NBCE examinations and publishing interpretations of those performance levels.
The NBCE deems all information pertaining to examinees and colleges as confidential and strives to maintain that confidentiality.
-- Individuals advertising themselves as "national board certified" or as a "Diplomate" of the NBCE.
The NBCE has not issued a diplomate certificate since 1983, and no longer uses that outmoded term. The board does provide a certificate of attainment to examinees upon successful completion of Part 1 and Part II of the NBCE examinations. As the scores from these exams meet only part of the requirement for licensure, use of these scores and the board's name in promotional material can be misleading.
The NBCE has informed all known offending parties in such cases of the appropriate use of the NBCE name.
The national board states that any inappropriate use of its name and/or information will result in legal action against the offenders.
