Northwestern Awarded $150,000 Grant for Carpal Tunnel Research

By Editorial Staff
BLOOMINGTON, Minnesota - The Wolfe-Harris Center for Clinical Studies at Northwestern Health Sciences University (NHSU) has been awarded a $150,000 grant by the Foundation for Chiropractic Education for the study "Chiropractic Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Related Conditions of the Elderly." James Hulber,PhD, an associate professor at NHSU, will be the principal investigator.

The university was only recently awarded a $1.5-million research grant from the National Institutes of Health for a five-year study of acute neck pain, the largest research study in the school's history.

In 2001, NHSU garnered $3.4 million in federal research grants, including funding for two studies from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for nearly $1 million each: one focusing on chronic neck pain; the other on low back pain. Gert Bronfort,DC,PhD, is the principal investigator for both HRSA projects.

"Our research team's ability to ask research questions that truly address the gaps in scientific literature to the satisfaction of NIH reviewers in the area of conservative management of neck and back pain is an important reason for our success," explained Dr. Bronfort.

ACA Joins HHS in Organ-Donor Program

ARLINGTON, VA - The American Chiropractic Association has announced that it has signed on as a partner and charter member of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Secretary Tommy Thompson's Workplace Partnership for Life, a nationwide network to increase the number of organ, tissue, marrow and blood donors in the United States.

As a charter member of Workplace, the ACA will help educate doctors on how they and their patients can become organ donors. The ACA hopes to build interest among chiropractic state associations to develop a state model for a chiropractic public relations campaign.

Two doctors of chiropractic who have received life-saving organs from living donors have agreed to serve as spokespersons: ACA past president, Dr. Russell Sawyer of Sioux Falls, SD, and Dr. Julie Carlson of Glen Ellen, CA.

At the launch of his initiative, Secretary Thompson introduced representatives from 18 major corporations (including GM, Chrysler, Ford, Barr Laboratories and Verizon) that had signed on as charter members.

As of August 2001, 78,000 patients in the U.S. were on the waiting list for organs. Approximately 15 patients on the waiting list die each day because donor organs were not available, and thousands more need tissues and marrow.
