Chiropractic Citizens Coalition

By Editorial Staff
A nonprofit consumer awareness group called Citizens Coalition for Chiropractic (CCC) has issued a press release debunking the recent media attacks on chiropractic. The release addresses the anti-chiropractic "20/20" segment and the American Heart Association's pronouncement on the dangers of stroke from chiropractic manipulation.

Citing statistics from published studies, the CCC pronounced chiropractic safer than aspirin, and added: "... if the public were truly aware of the relative risks associated with chiropractic treatment compared with that of various medical procedures, including prescribed and over-the-counter medications, they would choose to do as many millions of Americans have and make chiropractic their 'First Choice' in health care."

Student Sails to Victory in New Zealand Regatta

The America3 yachting team that won the 1992 America's Cup sent a contingent of key sailors, including student Rick Brent of Life Chiropractic College West, to compete in an exhibition race against Team New Zealand in Auckland Harbor February 25-27. The Americans were victorious over the New Zealand Kiwis.

A sophomore from San Francisco, Rick enrolled at Life West in September of 1992. Originally from East Lynne, Connecticut, Rick started competing in the 85-foot Maxie boat class in the mid-1980s. He won the world championship in 1985 and was racing on the Grand Prix level when he was selected to sail with the America3 team.

The next America's Cup competition will take place in 1995 off the waters of San Diego, California, site of the 1992 America3 victory over the Italian boat Il Moro di Venezia (see the June 19, 1992 issue). Rick hopes to compete then, depending on his college schedule.

Robert DeStefano, DC

DC Treats and Competes in 1993 Hawaiian Ironman

Dr. Robert DeStefano, a New Jersey chiropractic practitioner, recently realized his dream of completing the Hawaiian Ironman World Triathlon. He also was one of an eight-member team of DCs from the ACA present at the event who treated triathletes the week prior to the race.

The Hawaii Ironman competition is the ultimate fitness challenge: a grueling 2.4 mile ocean swim, followed by a 112 mile bicycle race, and finising with a marathon (26.2 miles) across the bleak lava fields of the Kona coast.

This year's competition attracted an astounding 25,000 applicants from around the world; 1,490 triathletes were selected to compete.
