Largest Incoming Winter Class in PCCW History
Changing Student ProfileThe winter quarter at Palmer College of Chiropractic West opened with 75 new students, the largest incoming winter class in the school's 13-year history.
A study of the new student body revealed some changes from the past: students are younger, about 26 years old; 43 percent have a B.S. or B.A. degrees; and 27 percent are from foreign countries. There are also more female students, representing 33 percent of the total student body.

Pro Golfer Calls DC for HelpDuring the Las Vegas Golf Championship, Paul Azinger of the Professional Golfer's Assoc. (PGA) called Jeff Fine, D.C., a 1990 LACC graduate. "He was complaining of lower back pain and sciatica down his left leg," explained Dr. Fine. Mr. Azinger commented that chiropractic treatment helps him play better. He saw Dr. Fine three times during the four-day tournament. "We gave him some massages and adjustments, trying to help him with his problem," said Dr. Fine.
Mr. Azinger seems to have benefitted from the chiropractic treatment. Following the Vegas tournament, Paul won the Tournament Players Championship at Pinehurst, North Carolina and a purse of $360,000.
The 50's Revived during Alumni Festivities
The Alumni Association and the Associated Student Body of the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC) sponsored alumni activities to raise funds for the graduating celebrations for the December 1992 and April 1993 classes.
The alumni events were diverse, from the educational to the entertaining. Dr. Ron Berman, graduate of LACC's class of 1968, presented the seminar "Success Opportunities through Speaking." There were class reunions, and a sock hop featuring "DC-DJ" Dr. Terry Yochum, LACC adjunct faculty member. Over 100 LACC alumni, faculty, postgraduate faculty, students and staff attended the sock hop.

LCCW Has 24 Students Named to Who's WhoThe 1993 edition of the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges will include the names of 24 students from Life Chiropractic College West (LCCW). The students were named based on their academic achievement, community service, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.

Life West Students Win Scholarships
Five LCCW students were awarded $500 scholarships for the 1993 winter quarter: Terri Hamilton, David Heffer, Elizabeth O'Donnell, Michael Putman, and Aine Sweeney. Recipients were selected based upon community involvement, public service, and academic standing.
Seven other LCCW students received $250 scholarships from the American Chiropractic Association (ACA)'s Springwall Trust scholarship fund: Michael Beddoe, David Heffer, Janet Laney, Sandy Skolnik, Casey Tucker, Paul Vose, and Gary Zoffada. All had a minimum grade point average of 3.0. The scholarship funding is provided by the Springwall Trust of Springwall Associates, Inc.
LCCW Expands ICA Diplomate Program to Michigan
In cooperation with the Michigan Chiropractic Council, LCCW will now host a three-year program leading to diplomate status with the Council on Applied Chiropractic Science of the International Chiropractors Association (ICA).
The Diplomate in Applied Chiropractic Sciences (DACS) program began January 23, 1993 in Novi, Michigan. It is the third DACS offering by Life West, with other programs are already underway in Washington State and New York City. The curriculum is designed to provide the practicing DC with greater skills and competencies in a wide range of evaluative, diagnostic, assessment, rehabilitative, and spinal adjusting procedures. The intent of the program is to develop the expertise to comprehend and apply emerging technologies and clinical protocol to a subluxation-based chiropractic model.
The program consists of 30 seminars, each 12 hours (10 per year). Each will offer separate relicensure certification for doctors wishing to participate in only part of the program. Subject areas include imaging, orthopedics, evaluation/assessment, technique, biomechanics, and neurology.

LCCW Faculty Update
Jason Araghi, D.C., a Life West Gonstead technique instructor, presented a research paper at the ICA's Pediatric Conference in Colorado Springs. His presentation was the case report "Post-traumatic evaluation and treatment of pediatric patient with head injury."
Kathleen King, D.C., DACBR, chair of the Life West radiology department, has been appointed as a consultant to the Vermont State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Dr. King is also a consultant to the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners.
