LACCS Fights Hunger with HOPE Day

By Editorial Staff
The Los Angeles County Chiropractic Society (LACCS) hosted its Fourth Annual HOPE (Helping Other People Eat) Day on February 9, 1993. In exchange for a donation of a nonperishable food items, people visiting participating chiropractors received complimentary examinations. The food goes to Love Is Feeding Everyone (LIFE), the nonprofit food recovery and distribution program founded by actors Dennis Weaver and Valerie Harper in 1983.

For the second consecutive year, K-LITE of Los Angeles was the official radio sponsor of the event. Actors who donate time to LIFE, including Dorian Harewood and Dee Wallace Stone, recorded public service messages to inform people about the event.

According to 1993 HOPE Day Chairman Dr. Robert Martin, over 200 doctor's offices throughout the country participated. "This year HOPE Day takes on added urgency as we help rebuild L.A. following last year's devastating riots that left thousands without work, homes, and food," said Dr. Martin.

HOPE Day was created in 1990 by Dr. Glen Fischel, who realized that by donating care for just one day, LACCS members could help feed thousands of needy people and involve the entire community in a project devoted to insuring the well-being of all its residents. During HOPE Day 1992, participating DCs netted over 80,000 pounds of food, and gave over 6,000 free examinations. This was the largest single donation ever presented to LIFE, which then distributes the food to more than 100 local churches, temples, and other nonprofit organizations who collectively feed over 100,000 hungry people a week.

"We can't ignore the serious hunger problem that is increasing every day," said Dennis Weaver. "In these recessionary times, we must all do as much as possible to help the less fortunate. We are grateful that LACCS will again donate their phenomenal HOPE Day proceeds to us."

Said LACCS President Dr. Joseph Canul, "LACCS members have a strong commitment to the complete health of our community. We believe that a truly healthy community cannot be achieved until its members receive complete and proper nutrition. HOPE Day allows LACCS doctors to put their beliefs into practice by delivering needed chiropractic care and helping feed the hungry of Los Angeles at the same time."
