Running With a Purpose and a Message
On Oct. 11, every member of the Non-Profit Chiropractic Organization's (NPCO) race team successfully completed the 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, the first time a chiropractic team has run in the annual event.
"As I ran through the streets of Chicago wearing my Team NPCO neon-green jersey, I was amazed by the number of people that cheered me on by yelling out the [team] slogan written across the front of my jersey," said Ryan Novak, DC, of Hickory Hills (Chicago). "It kept me going not only that day, but has continued to keep me going as I continue to take care of patients on a daily basis."
Added Dr. Bruce Phillips of North Vernon, Ind.: "The Chicago Marathon was just an awesome experience. I was very delighted to participate and support Team NPCO in their first appearance at the Chicago Marathon! The fans were great and I received many positive comments from fellow runners in support of chiropractic! I was a little sore on Monday, but it was worth it."
A portion of mile 14 of the race course was designated the official cheering station for the NPCO team; volunteers, friends and family cheered team members on and held signs that read "Nothing Beats Chiropractic" and "Run With a Vision."

Sherman College Loses the "Straight" - in Its Name
Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic in Spartansburg, S.C., is now known simply as Sherman College of Chiropractic, a change approved unanimously by the Sherman Board of Trustees at its fall 2009 meeting. The name change gives the college the official name under which it was founded in 1973 by removing the word "Straight," which was added in the late '70s.
"The college will always remain true to its roots, providing a curricular focus on traditional chiropractic," said Sherman President Jon C. Schwartzbauer, DC. "Our founding name better reflects who we are - a contemporary educational institution committed to providing the best education possible, an institution with a strong commitment to educational progress, and an institution geared to meeting the demands of chiropractic students, both today and in the future."
According to Sherman officials, the college's promotional materials and Web site will be revised in the coming months to reflect the name change. To learn more, visit www.sherman.edu.
