NBCE Elects New Board
The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) has elected a new board of directors and executive committee. Elections took place during the board's annual meeting in Marco Island, Fla., in early May, with the following doctors elected to serve on the 11-member board:

Northwestern Students Granted APHA Membership
Northwestern Health Sciences University (NHSU) has announced it is providing students with a one-year membership to the American Public Health Association, effective when students begin their first public / community health class. Along with paid APHA membership dues, students will receive complimentary subscriptions to the American Journal of Public Health and The Nation's Health, a newspaper published 10 times annually that covers all major news in health care.
"Northwestern is dedicated to providing students the best chiropractic education," said Dr. Mark Zeigler, NHSU president and longtime attendee of the annual APHA meeting. "Emphasizing the importance of public health is important in giving students a well-rounded curriculum."
Northwestern is the fourth chiropractic college to provide its students with APHA membership; as reported previously, Southern California University of Health Sciences, New York Chiropractic College, and the University of Western States all pioneered APHA membership for their students beginning with the fall 2009 incoming classes. As with NHSU, automatic membership begins at the start of the term in which students enroll in their first public / community health class.
"This is an important step in inculcating a public health and service mentality in a generation of our young chiropractors," said Dr. Rand Baird, World Federation of Chiropractic public health committee chair and a founding member of the Chiropractic Health Care section of the APHA.
WFC Congress: Biggest Chiropractic Event in Latin America
More than 900 delegates of the World Federation of Chiropractic attended the WFC's 11th Biennial Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in April. The event, hosted by the Brazilian Chiropractors' Association (ABQ) and co-sponsored by Brazil's two chiropractic programs, at Feevale University in Novo Hamburgo and the Anhembi Morumbi University (UAM) in Sao Paulo, focused on themes of sports chiropractic, the cervical spine, the history and current status of spinal manipulation, and new models of chiropractic practice.
Related meetings held during this year's congress included the WFC Assembly, attended by leaders representing nearly 50 international associations; the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic (FICS) Assembly, attended by sports chiropractic leaders worldwide; and the annual meeting of the World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS), attended by 115 student leaders representing 27 chiropractic institutions worldwide. Other highlights from this year's event included the following:
Sports: Mr. Bernard Raijzman, former minister of sport, president of the Athletes Commission for the Brazilian Olympic Committee and one of the country's most famous volleyball players, opened the congress. Later, the WFC honored Carlos Alberto Torres, who captained the 1970 Brazilian soccer team that won the World Cup. Torres brought his chiropractor, Dr. Elisa Dallegrave, on stage and recounted how she helped him recover from a back injury and stay in competitive shape over the years. A sports chiropractic Grand Rounds session also took place, featuring a panel of experts including Drs. Lindsay Rowe, Tom Greenway, Sheila Wilson, Marcelo Botelho and Wagner Castropil.
Research: First prize among the more than 200 original research presentations submitted for the 2011 congress went to Dr. Mette Jensen-Stochkendahl and colleagues for a randomized controlled trial of chiropractic treatment for patients with musculoskeletal chest pain. Dr. Jensen-Stochkendahl, et al., (Denmark) received the Scott Haldeman Award, worth $10,000 and sponsored by the National Chiropractic Mutual Insurance Company (NCMIC). The three other main research awards went to Jacqueline Trierweiler and colleagues from Feevale University, Brazil (second prize); Dr. Allan Kalamir and colleagues from Macquarie University in Australia (third prize); and Drs. Marcelo Botelho and Bruno Andrade of Brazil (Private Practice Award).
Philosophy: During the WCCS meeting, delegates participated in a discussion forum regarding the most contentious topic in chiropractic of late: whether scope of practice should allow for prescriptive privileges. Speakers included Dr. Gian Joerger, president of the Association of Swiss Chiropractors; Dr. Dennis Richards, past president, Chiropractors Association of Australia; Dr. Richard Brown, president, British Chiropractic Association; Dr. Gerard Clum, past president, Life Chiropractic College West; and Dr. Charmaine Korporaal, vice president, Chiropractors' Association of South Africa and program leader, School of Chiropractic, Durban University of Technology.

FCP Spokesperson Rebecca Halstead Honored Again
On the heels of her Person of the Year Award from DC, Retired General Rebecca Halstead, spokesperson for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, has received the "Chiropractic Crusader Award" from Breakthrough Coaching. Dr. Mark Sanna, company president, presented the award to Gen. Halstead at Breakthrough's mid-May coaching seminar in Chicago.
