It's Winter -- Some Warnings about the Flu, Chicken Pox, Tylenol, Aspirin and Children, Part II

By Darryl Curl
I received quite a few letters from last month's article, where we provided some warnings about the flu, chicken pox, Tylenol, aspirin and children. I'd like to pass along a letter that I believe you will want to keep in your patient resources file. This letter comes from Sandi Nelson, executive director of the National Reye's Syndrome Foundation. It's nice to know that Dynamic Chiropractic has a broad readership.

"Thank you for the article on Reye's syndrome that appeared in the February 9, 1998 issue of Dynamic Chiropractic. The grandmother of a Reye's syndrome victim sent a copy of the article to us. This grandmother happens to be the mother of our founder and president, John E. Freudenberger. If individuals contact you about additional information on Reye's, they are welcome to call 1-800-233-7393 and we will be happy to supply them with our free brochure packet. They may also reference our web site at http://www.bright/net/~reyessyn."

Errata

Terry L. Daniels, DC, wrote, "I just have a quick question regarding your article about acetaminophen in the most recent Dynamic Chiropractic. I briefly skimmed the article, but was unable to find a reference in the body of the article to the figure or table you included on the first page. My question is, what value is attached to the numbers on the horizontal axis (1-20)? Is it millions, thousands, or hundreds? I would appreciate if you'd let me know at your earliest convenience."

[Figure 1: Leading causes of drug fatalities in the U.S., as reported to poison control centers (1996 fatalities). Reference: Easton T. What you don't know can kill you. Forbes Magazine January 12, 1998.]

Acetaminophen*
Cocaine
Prescription narcotics

Calcium channel blockers (used to treat hypertension) Amitriptyline (antidepressant) Benzodiazepines (such as valium) Aspirin Alone and in combination with other products. The top axis [Figure 1] describes deaths numerically. For example, aspirin killed about 50 people per year, whereas amitriptyline annually kills just under 60 people. The American Association of Poison Control Centers counts about 100 deaths a year from acetaminophen alone or in combination. This figure understates the total, since hospitals are not required to report cases.

Online Resources for Chiropractic and Children

While we are on the subject of children, I put together a few World Wide Web sites for chiropractic and children to include in your patient resources file:

http://freeweb.pdq.net/drjackie/art4.htm. Children pattern their body-mind connections after those whom they model. They will learn to hold their neck forward and shoulders tense when in confrontation or fear in the same fashion their parents do. We believe that they observe the energy flow in their parents and the energy blockages (before they learn that they can't do that) and emulate in their own body-mind. Our children model after us how to react or respond to our environment. It appears that the judgments we make with our body, our face, and our spine are learned by our children as they learn to deal with life in a similar fashion and mommy and daddy.

http://www.webgate.net/~welchiro/kids.html. Here's a prevention-oriented site you might enjoy. Many spinal problems begin in childhood and develop gradually. Chiropractic approaches spinal and overall health care from a preventative point of view. Catch a problem before it develops and it can be corrected much quicker.

http://www.flash.net/~clarkjm/children.htm. When is the child ready for their first chiropractic check-up? Find out here. A natural process develops to strengthen the muscles of the neck as the child learns to hold their head up. As the muscles of the neck develop and support of the head occurs, crawling follows, then the first few steps are made. This is also a natural time for a chiropractic check-up. If neglected, all the bumps and falls that occur during this period of rapid growth may lead to serious spinal deformities later in life. This can set the stage for scoliosis, growing pains and a weakened immune system response.

http://www.fone.net/~arno/products.htm. Are you looking for a video on children and chiropractic? Stop by this Internet site. Why children need chiropractic care is answered through a dynamic, in-depth analysis of the health care system -- or so says the author. The videos also discuss the medical disease paradigm that is governing the lives and the decisions of most people. The author believes his videos offer a powerful expose of the cause of vertebral subluxations.
