Retirement Dinner Honors Professor Stonebrink

Nearly 200 alumni and friends gave a retirement dinner to honor Richard Stonebrink, DC, ND, DABCO, FICC, a long-time educator and chiropractic physician at Western States.

The event featured a videotape documentary produced by the college's instructional media center chronicling Dr. Stonebrink's contributions to academic standards, postgraduate education, inter-professional relations, and standards of care. The underlying theme of integrity and commitment was echoed throughout the presentation by chiropractic colleagues, students, and members of the legal profession,

Representing the American Chiropractic Association, Oregon ACA delegate Dr. Dan Beeson presented an award of appreciation to Dr. Stonebrink, one of the founding members of the organization.

Citing Dr. Stonebrink's numerous achievements, WCCS President William Dallas, DC, acting as master of ceremonies, presented the college's gifts: an engraved gold watch, and a Waterford crystal bowl. "Dick will long be remembered for his passion for excellence," stated Dr. Dallas. "His remarkable determination to establish chiropractic as a main player in the health care system is evident in many of our current achievements."

Noting Dr. Stonebrink's passion for life on the links, WSCC faculty member Dr. Mark Sepulveda unveiled the jewel of the evening: a golf cart and clubs given by alumni and friends. Dr. Stonebrink also received a caricature drawing created by a student, and framed golf photographs.

A 1954 WSCC graduate, Dr. Stonebrink taught intermittently at Western States since 1956. He also served as academic dean and dean of the postgraduate division.

A diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists, Dr. Stonebrink was the author of the course syllabus approved by the Council on Chiropractic Orthopedics (CCO). He served as curriculum chairman for the CCO for seven years.

Dr. Stonebrink's honors include: Fellow of the International College of Chiropractic; American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists Distinguished Service Award (1978, 1987, 1988); WSCC Alumnus of the Year; WSCC professor emeritus; and the Oregon Chiropractic Physicians Association's Distinguished Service Award.

The October event drew alumni from California, Washington, and Colorado.

New Continuing Education Programs

The department of postgraduate education at Western States will offer a nationwide slate of continuing education programs in 1997.

A first of its kind 36-hour certification program in botanical medicine will begin March 1-2 in Portland. The program features some of the world's foremost authorities on phytomedicines. The three-part series will be co-sponsored by the University of Colorado Health Science Center's College of Pharmacy, and certified through the American Council of Pharmaceutical Educators.

In February, field doctors interested in strengthening their orthopedic skills will have an opportunity to take advantage of a new orthopedic diplomate program sponsored by the college. Completion of the 420-hour orthopedic series leads to recognition as a board-eligible chiropractic orthopedist and eligibility for diplomate status with the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists. For more information on these programs, contact the Department of Continuing Education at 1-800-215-3716.

Dr. Gerber Highlights Nutrition for Athletes

Maximizing sports performance through optimum nutrition is the subject of Dr. James Gerber's chapter in a major new book on chiropractic sports medicine. Dr. Gerber, an associate professor of clinical sciences at Western States, penned the chapter, "Sports Nutrition," for the book Conservative Management of Sports Injuries.

"Nutrition is a crucial issue for athletes who want to compete at their best and stay healthy. Good nutrition can improve performance, while poor nutrition habits not only impair athletic ability, but can cause long-term health problems as well," says Dr. Gerber, who earned his chiropractic degree from Western States.

Dr. Gerber's topics include dietary needs of the athlete, nutrition and sports injuries, nutrition-related problems in athletes, and frontiers and controversies in sports medicine.

Dr. Gerber has written extensively on nutrition and is the author of the Handbook of Preventive and Therapeutic Nutrition. He has lectured on the topic for the chiropractic sports physician diplomate. He holds an M.S. in nutrition from the University of Bridgeport and diplomates in both nutrition and chiropractic orthopedics.
