California Chiro. Association Fighting to Change Worker's Comp Rules
The California Chiropractic Association is working hard to rectify the state's 2004 worker's compensation reforms, which eliminated doctors of chiropractic as primary treating physicians in work comp cases after 24 visits.
The CCA notes that since the adoption of the 24-visit cap more than a decade ago, there has been "a documented and alarming increase in opioid use and surgery among injured workers" in California. Oregon saw a similar trend in opioid / surgery overuse, which led to changes in coverage for treatment of back conditions to include more conservative care options, according to the CCA.

Search for New President at TCC
Six months after Brad McKechnie, DC, DACAN, stepped down from his position as president of Texas Chiropractic College after less than two years of service, the TCC Board of Regents has announced it has initiated an official search for a successor. The new president will be the 15th in the college's 108-year history and will take the reins from interim president Dr. Larry Johnson, a TCC board member named to the position upon Dr. McKechnie's departure last October.
"The selection of the 15th President of Texas Chiropractic College is one of the most important tasks this Board of Regents will undertake," said Dr. Monte Blue, TCC board chairman and a member of the presidential search committee.
Kudos for Chiropractic Online Master's Programs in Nutrition
New York Chiropractic College and Logan University both rank in the top five online master's nutrition programs according to BestColleges.com, which ranks Logan third and NYCC fourth on its 2016 list.
Logan offers a Master of Science in Nutrition and Human Performance; NYCC offers a Master of Science in Applied Clinical Nutrition. According to BestColleges.com, schools on the list are ranked "according to [their] academic strengths, learning goals, positive student outcomes, course offerings and online classroom experience." North Carolina State and Northeastern University rank first and second, respectively, on this year's list.
Life University Professor Hits an Ace
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Board of Directors has a new member: Dr. Mark Kovacs, director of Life University's Sports Science Institute and an associate professor in the university's Department of Sport Health Science. A former NCAA Division I doubles champion while at Auburn University, Dr. Kovacs is no stranger to the tennis world, but his career experience also includes executive in a Fortune 50 company, sport scientist, researcher and coach – all of which bode well for his success with the ITA, as Dr. Kovacs explained:
""I am very honored to be elected to the ITA Board of Directors," he said. "The individuals serving on the Board are leaders in a variety of industries, including university presidents, athletic directors, CEOs of technology and media companies, and Wall Street money managers. Collegiate tennis was a major aspect of my life, and I am honored and excited about contributing to grow and develop collegiate tennis for the next generation."
CCGPP Person of the Year
The Council on Chiropractic Guidelines and Practice Parameters recently honored both Dr. Evan Gwilliam and Dr. Ray Foxworth with the council's "Person of the Year" award for 2015. According to the award announcement, both men help train doctors of chiropractic to utilize CCGPP information / research in best practices. Dr. Gwilliam is vice president of ChiroCode; Dr. Foxworth is president and founder of ChiroHealthUSA.
"Both men are exceptional leaders in the field of chiropractic and, through their companies and programs, have helped to raise tens of thousands of dollars for research and guideline creation for the chiropractic profession," commented CCGPP Chair Dr. Greg Baker.
NBCE Scholarship Competition for DC Students Announced
Do you know a DC student who needs a little extra cash to pay for their education? Then let them know about a new National Board of Chiropractic Examiners scholarship opportunity announced this year at ACC-RAC. The annual competition, which provides three $2,000 awards for winning essays, is open to chiropractic students currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. program.
For an essay to be eligible for award consideration, it "must focus on or relate to chiropractic humanities topics including: history, philosophy, practice perspectives, jurisprudence/law, ethics, theory, sociology, politics, and all aspects of social sciences that address historical or philosophical topics."
