NFL Great Rocky Bleier Speaks at NYCC
Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rocky Bleier recently spoke to NYCC students, faculty, and the public at New York Chiropractic College (NYCC). He gave a motivational talk, "Becoming All You Can Be," relating how he overcame his own hardships.
A Steelers draft pick in 1968, Mr. Bleier was drafted again -- this time into army service in Vietnam -- before he could prove himself as a rookie. He returned home crippled by enemy rifle and grenade wounds in both legs. Following an excruciating two-year struggle to recover from these injuries, Rocky returned to the Steelers and had a successful 12-year career with the team. His touchdown in the 1979 Superbowl against the Dallas Cowboys won the game for the Steelers, their third Superbowl title, and is considered one of the most memorable plays in NFL history.
DC Competes in 1992 Offshore Tour World Championships
Scott Brown, DC, from Knoxville, Tennessee, and his team "Bad to the Bone" placed 6th in the annual 1992 Offshore Professional Tour World Championships off Key West, Florida. The first race of the World Championships was run November 11th, and the second and final race on November 14th. The competition featured eight different classes of boats, three race associations, over 80 race teams representing countries around the world, and 50,000 fans for the week-long festivities.
Dr. Brown commented that he gave quite a few adjustments both between and after the races. With boats attaining speeds of 100 mph through choppy seas, a chiropractor is a definite asset.
New Mexico DC Indicted on 37 Counts
Dr. Lawrence Johnson of Los Lunas, New Mexico was indicted by the state's attorney general on 37 counts including fraud, insurance fraud, tax evasion, and racketeering. According to a press release from the New Mexico Attorney General's Office, these indictments are the result of a seven-month investigation of Dr. Johnson's practice, which culminated in the State Taxation and Revenue Department inspectors assisting the attorney general in the investigation and presentation of the case to the grand jury. Dr. Johnson's wife, Sunny, who works at the clinic, was charged with one count of practicing chiropractic without a license and one count of practicing radiological technology without a certificate.
The Johnsons are each charged with five counts of fraud, two counts of racketeering, 22 counts of making false claim or application for insurance, and six counts of tax evasion. If convicted on all counts, the Johnsons could face nearly 75 years in prison.
