A Moment of Silence for Iowa DCs Bud Crowder and Roger Horn

By Editorial Staff
Dr. Elmer L. "Bud" Crowder, a former Palmer College faculty member and administrator, and a fellow in the International Chiropractors Association, died July 15 in Davenport, Iowa. An Iowa native, he was born in Dana on October 4, 1920.

Dr. Crowder was a decorated pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force in England during WWII. Near the end of the war, Bud Crowder studied at Augustana College and St. Ambrose University; he graduated from Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1947, as did his wife, Dr. Juanita Nichols Crowder. He earned a Philosopher of Chiropractic degree in 1961, and taught technique and instruction at Palmer. He later became the director of student services and the student clinics. He was named director of alumni in 1964, and vice president of development in 1971. In 1999, Dr. Crowder was named to the Palmer Academy of Chiropractic for his service and commitment to the school.

"He was a legendary teacher who touched the lives of several generations of Palmer chiropractors," said Palmer President Guy Riekeman,DC. "As an administrator, he was an integral player in the effort to unite Palmer alumni into a cohesive unit to increase fundraising, student recruitment and chiropractic awareness to the general public. He was also my chiropractor, and each visit I saw him, I learned more deeply what it meant to be an artist and to love your profession. Palmer will miss this great champion of our cause."

Dr. Crowder is survived by his wife, Juanita, and a daughter, Ann.

A memorial service was held Thursday, August 8, for Roger W. Horn,DC, 62, who died July 29 of an apparent heart attack in Rudd, Iowa.

Born in Mason City, Iowa, Roger Horn attended Mason City High School, during which he won the Mason City Open (golf) before graduating in 1957. Though he won a golf scholarship to the University of New Mexico, his vocation would be that of healer.

After graduating from the University of Iowa with a degree in science, Dr. Horn became a dentist, and an alumnus of the UI School of Dentistry. He practiced for 20 years in Ames, Nora Springs and Mason City.

Dr. Horn graduated from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in 1985. He made his home in Clear Lake, Iowa, where he also maintained his practice.

Dr. Horn was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph O. and Ester Horn, and is survived by his son, Bradley, of Portland, Oregon, and brother Robert, of Bainbridge Island, Washington.
