Michael Smatt, DC, of Pleasantville, New York, often referred to as the "chiropractor to the stars," having adjusted such celebrities as Marla Maples and Gloria Steinem in his 17 year chiropractic career, has received the New York Chiropractic Council's Beacon award for being named the "Chiropractor of the Year" for 1997-98.
It was through his contact with Ms. Maples that Dr. Smatt was able to attend a fundraiser with then N.Y. Governor Cuomo and help address the issues of chiropractic to that administration. In the past four years, Dr. Smatt has attended several other political fundraisers, helping to spread the word about the needs of the chiropractic profession to important legislators nationwide.
Dr. Robert Reiss, last year's winner of the Beacon award, acknowledged Dr. Smatt for "his singleness of purpose, uncompromising focus and love for his profession." Dr. Reiss added: "He represents what our Beacon award is all about, the giving, loving and serving individual that is a beacon for us all."
A 1980 graduate of New York Chiropractic College, Dr. Smatt is the director of Madison Avenue Chiropractic Center in New York City. He also maintains a home and office with his wife, Dr. Lori Smatt, in Pleasantville.

Glenn Fried has been appointed as the interim dean of faculty for the 1997-98 academic year, taking on the responsibility for supervising the faculty and curriculum of NYCC's doctor of chiropractic program at the Seneca Falls campus. Mr. Fried will still retain his position as the college's registrar.
Lewis Bazakos, DC, has been elected to the alumni seat of the NYCC Board of Trustees for a three year term. A 1975 NYCC alumnus, Dr. Bazakos holds a masters of science from the University of Bridgeport, and is currently involved in the rehabilitation diplomate program at NYCC.
Dr. Bazakos distinguished service to the chiropractic profession has earned him a number of awards, including "Chiropractor of the Year" from the New York State Chiropractic Assoc.
Hunter Mollin, DC (NYCC class of '80), acting chairperson of NYCC's technique and principles dept., is the new vice president of the newly formed chiropractic technique consortium of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges.
Dr. Catherine Bruckner is the new director of the Seneca Falls Health Center at NYCC. She has been the acting director for the past year.
Anthony Morgante, an 8th trimester student, has won the $1,000 Kenneth Padgett alumni scholarship by writing the winning essay, "Spreading the Chiropractic Message."
Darryl Koch, also in his 8th trimester, has won NCMIC's $675 scholarship with his essay on the role of doctor/patient communication in risk management.
