DCs Needed for World Corporate Games in London

The ACA Council on Sports Injuries (COSI), and the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic (FICS) are looking for DCs interested in serving as volunteer chiropractors for the fifth World Corporate Games (WCG) this fall in London. The WCG is a one-week event, September 26 through October 4, in which athletes from corporations all over the world compete in such sports as basketball, soccer, swimming, track, volleyball, bowling, diving, field hockey, bicycling, and tennis. In addition to treating doctors, the ACA Sports Council would also like a team of DCs to compete. Drs. Meeker and Mootz Participate in American Back Society Conference

William Meeker, D.C., M.P.H. and Robert Mootz, Ph.D., D.C. both participated in a variety of panel discussions and paper presentations at the recent American Back Society Spring Symposium on Back Pain in New Orleans (see July 17, 1992 issue of "DC"). Dr. Meeker presented a paper entitled, "The Subluxation Complex - Fact or Fiction," served as a director for an instructional program which addressed "progress in the development of chiropractic practice guidelines and standards of care," and was a faculty member for the workshop "Chiropractic in Interprofessional Settings." Dr. Mootz was selected to represent chiropractic on a panel of 14 health care disciplines who discussed multidisciplinary approaches to diagnosing and treating various spinal conditions. He was the workshop director for the "Chiropractic in Interprofessional Settings" workshop and joined Dr. Meeker as a faculty contributor to the "Progress in Chiropractic Research" course.

 



WSCC Names New Academic Vice President

Bernard Coyle, Ph.D. has been appointed Western States Chiropractic College (WSCC)'s new vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Coyle, former vice president for academic affairs and research at Palmer West, assumed his duties on June 8th. His primary responsibilities are to direct all academic programs as well as oversee the college's educational budget and policies. A native of New Zealand, Dr. Coyle holds his doctorate in physical chemistry from Northwestern University, and is a co-founder of the Consortium of Chiropractic Research (CCR).

 



Goodbye Back Pain in Paperback Distribution

Dr. L. John Faye's book Goodbye Back Pain is now out in paperback, published by Berkley Press. Currently, about 100,000 copies are in distribution to bookstores, drugstores, supermarkets, airports, etc. The "Special Markets" department of Berkley Press is selling 10 or more copies of the book at a special 40 percent discount rate with no shipping charge added "for sales promotions, premiums, fund raising, or educational use."

 



Former Olympic Trainer Joins Palmer Faculty

Katherine Lee Lundgren, formerly a trainer for the U.S. Luge team, recently jointed the staff at Palmer College of Chiropractic as an athletic trainer for the Ancillary Procedures Department. Before her position with the U.S. Luge team, Ms. Lundgren worked for the Olympic Committee in sports medicine and therapeutic exercise at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York. While there she cared for such well-known athletes as football star and Olympic bob-sledder Herschel Walker, and speed skater Dan Jansen.

Ms. Lundgren holds a B.S. from Penn State in athletic training and her duties will include developing post-injury strengthening and conditioning programs for chiropractic patients.

 



TCC Starts Ford Johnson Memorial Fund

Texas Chiropractic College (TCC) student Eric Tondera recently started a memorial tree fund in honor of the late Dr. Ford Johnson. Dr. Johnson, whose chiropractic career included his tenure as executive director of the Texas Chiropractic Association (TCA), was a respected and well-loved veteran of chiropractic who died of cancer. To date, over $500 has been donated to the fund and six trees have been planted around the TCC campus. There are plans to purchase and plant five more. Contributors include: Dr. Cindy Grilk, Dr. Mike Smith, the doctors from the Southeast Rehabilitation and Diagnosis Center in El Paso, the doctors at Southwest Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Center in Houston, and the doctors at the Back Institute of Houston.

 



North Carolina Association to Honor Logan President Hagan

The North Carolina Chiropractic Association (NCCA) will honor Logan Chiropractic College President Dr. Beatrice Hagen during the association's fall convention November 12-15. There will be state reception in her honor. The NCCA will also celebrate a 75th anniversary since the organization was formed and the licensing law was established.
