The waves bubbled and lapped at my ankles as I squinted out over the water. The sun was suspended low in the sky as the day gave way to early dusk. Behind me, the soft rhythm of the bongos began.
Startled out of my day-dream reverie, I glanced at my watch with a twinge of guilt. I was supposed to meet my family in the lobby of the Sheraton Makaha Resort and Country Club 20 minutes ago. If you've wisely rented a car, another recreational area for the nature lover is Kahaluu and Chinaman's Hat, a small offshore island that resembles the shape of a plantations worker's cap. Kahaluu's adjacent fish ponds were the location of the "Karate Kid II." This tiny town fronts the center of Kanoehe Bay, an eight-mile recreational area that is protected by a barrier reef.
Then there are the Waiahole and Waikane valleys, which are home to most of Oahu's sweet potato crop. The area also offers papayas, bananas, pineapples, and coconuts at numerous roadside stands.
A drive up to Koko Head and Koko Crater drops you by Hanauma Bay for great snorkeling at this marine preserve. This area is also part of Oahu's last volcanic activity.
A tour of the rugged southern coast affords visitors views of Molokai and Lanai. A stop at the roadside terrace for a look at Holona Blowhoe where a geyser blasts up through a hole in the ceiling of a submerged lava tube when wave conditions are right.
For those who seek the excitement of great entertainment and night-life, the island of Oahu is alive with shows and spectacles primed for fun.
