Gene Veno, longtime executive vice president of the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association, has announced his retirement from the association effective July 31, 2010.
"[Gene] Veno will always be a friend of the Chiropractic profession and we will always be a friend of Gene Veno" said Albert Latronica, PCA president, in an association press release announcing Veno's retirement.
In addition to his many other awards and recognitions, Veno was named Dynamic Chiropractic's "Person of the Year" in 2005 for his ongoing efforts in support of chiropractic and chiropractic unity. (Veno served as president of the foundation for several years.)
Companies Donate Supplements to Support NUHS Health Clinics
Standard Process and Anabolic Labs have donated "several thousand dollars" worth of vitamin, mineral, herbal and other supplements to National University of Health Sciences. The supplements will be dispensed at NUHS clinics that treat the homeless and medically underserved. The university operates two clinics in Salvation Army mission facilities in Chicago, while its suburban Aurora clinic also treats many homeless and otherwise needy members of the community.
"We are extremely grateful to both Standard Process and Anabolic Labs for these donations, as it gives our clinics, our doctors and interns the tools they need to help their patients," said Dr. David Parish, dean of clinics at NUHS. "Many of these patients have had a long history of poor nutrition that has contributed to a deterioration in their health condition. Effective supplementation of vitamins and minerals can greatly affect their treatment outcome, and help them on the physical road to recovery as they rebuild their lives."
Parker Alumni Association Completes Historic Donation to Parker College
A donation of $5,000 has completed the Parker Alumni Association's $25,000 donation pledge to Parker College, made in 2008. With the $5,000 payment, the alumni association fulfilled its pledge more than two years sooner than expected, according to the college, allowing for the renovation of classroom space and a lounge area for interns. A release announcing the last payment noted that the overall donation was intended "to remind the Parker students that the association is here to support them as students and throughout their careers."
"We are so grateful for the tremendous amount of support that the alumni association gives to the students," said Parker College President, Dr. Fabrizio Mancini. "Their contributions play a big role in the students' lives."
Core Products to Match Donations to CCGPP
New Council on Chiropractic Guidelines and Practice Parameters (CCGPP) corporate sponsor Core Products recently committed $10,000 to the council and its ongoing "Clinical Compass" research synthesis in the form of a matching donation campaign. The company will donate $1 for every dollar donated by a member of the profession. In addition, DCs will receive a free Core Products pillow for every $100 donated, and any DC who commits to a monthly donation (in the form of a 12-month "membership" to the CCGPP / Clinical Compass at $84/month) will receive a 10 percent discount on all products offered at the Core Products Web site.
"This research is critical to establishing chiropractic as the thought leader for spinal manipulation. It will allow doctors of chiropractic to translate evidence into clinical practice and grow strong and healthy practices," said Phil Mattison, president of Core Products.
As reported in the June 17 issue of DC, the CCGPP has launched an online course intended to "help educate and familiarize practicing doctors of chiropractic with the available evidence and its utilization in record-keeping to substantiate and, when necessary, defend appropriate case management." NPCO 2010 Marathon Teams Raising Funds for Green Clinic
The Non-Profit Chiropractic Organization (NPCO), which fielded a race team at the 2009 Chicago Marathon and plans on fielding teams at the 2010 Chicago half-marathon and full marathon, has a specific goal this year: to raise enough money to build a self-sustainable "green" chiropractic clinic in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. According to NPCO President Joshua Heines, the project is both pivotal and possible:
"The idea of providing chiropractic healthcare through a self-sustaining, environmentally friendly 'green' clinic to impoverished communities is not only a very possible goal to achieve with today's technology, but in these communities, a necessity because of the constant power outages and lack of clean water," said Heines. "It is extremely important that we are able to have a clinic which is self-sustaining and has a reliable source of energy and clean water that will enable us to provide the best healthcare possible. Through these projects we can also provide education on how local residents can improve their own environments. This way we are providing a full circle of health in their body and their communities."
Members of Team NPCO are raising money and reaching out to eco-friendly corporations for financial support and equipment donations. Team members will also ultimately travel to Santo Domingo to help develop the clinic.
