NBA Coach: Don't Get Back Surgery

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr knows all about mental and physical toughness as a six-time NBA champion (five as a player; one – and counting – as coach of the Warriors).

But for the past two years, his toughness has been challenged perhaps more than ever by ongoing complications from back surgery.

As of press time, Kerr has not coached the past several playoff games and has said he may not coach again this postseason. He's also commented publicly on back surgery (he underwent surgery for a ruptured disc in 2015 and a second surgery for leaking spinal fluid a few months later), stating unequivocally: "If you have a back problem, stay away from surgery. I can say that from the bottom of my heart."

To listen to Kerr's comments in their entirety, visit the digital version of this article and click on the link to the ABC News video clip, which also includes comments from a spine surgeon and a doctor of chiropractic.

First Annual Roberto Clemente Sports Chiropractic Award

Lake Hiawatha, N.J., chiropractor Dr. Philip Santiago received the inaugural Roberto Clemente Sports Chiropractic Award in March 2017 courtesy of the Fédération Internationale de Chiropratique du Sport (FICS). Roberto Clemente Jr. accepted the award on behalf of his Major League Baseball (MLB) Hall of Fame father in a ceremony that also featured FICS President Dr. Peter Garbutt; FICS Foundation President Dr. Sheila Wilson; Logan University President Dr. Clay McDonald; and Dr. Aleisha Serrano of Puerto Rico.

"I want to thank FICS for cementing my father's legacy in the world of chiropractic," said Roberto Clemente Jr., "and thank Puerto Rican chiropractor Dr. Edgar Rivera for his research bringing to my attention how important the connection with chiropractic was for my father."

Logan University prepared the tribute video and sponsored the award, which will honor another deserving recipient in two years' time at the next FICS Symposium.

Life West Achieves Next Level of Accreditation

Life Chiropractic College West recently achieved regional accreditation from the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). The college initiated candidacy status in 2015; with regional accreditation through WSCUC, Life West DC graduates dating back to July 15, 2015 "can transfer those credits to other accredited undergraduate or postgraduate programs, depending on the institution."

In Remembrance: Dr. Stanley Kaplan

Respectfully submitted by Terry R. Yochum, DC, DACBR

On Dec. 28, 2016, Dr. Stanley S. Kaplan, renowned chiropractic orthopedist, died in his sleep at his home in Cocoa Beach, Fla., at the age of 80 of an apparent heart attack. Dr. Kaplan was a graduate of the New York Chiropractic College and a long-standing member and supporter of the Florida Chiropractic Association. He rendered many lectures for the FCA in the area of chiropractic orthopedics and impairment rating. He was a superb lecturer with a fantastic sense of humor, and always donated his honorarium back to the FCA.

Dr. Kaplan was president of the Florida Chiropractic Board of Examiners twice in his career. Along with Drs. John Mazion and Alfred States, he was one of the first three diplomates of the American Chiropractic Board of Orthopedics.

Dr. Kaplan will be missed by many and was certainly a very close friend of mine. He was married to his lovely wife, Marcia, for 59 years. Anyone wishing to send a sympathy card to his wife can do so at the following address: 433 S. Atlantic Avenue, Cocoa Beach, Florida 32931.
