A Comprehensive Model of Spine Care
The Global Spine Care Initiative, established by World Spine Care in 2014 to address the lack of a comprehensive model of spine care and featuring a multidisciplinary collaborative of 68 experts from 24 countries, appears to have accomplished its mission.
According to Scott Haldeman, DC, MD, PhD, principal investigator of the GSCI (and founder of World Spine Care, which provided financial management of the GSCI), "The GSCI model answers the call to action from international authorities and recommendations from the World Health Organization. Our model is a new approach to spinal disorders and is believed to be the first attempt at a comprehensive care pathway. Working together, we hope to make life better for many people whose lives are being impacted by spinal disorders and who need access to help, especially people in medically underserved communities and low- and middle-income countries. We encourage clinicians in all healthcare professions to learn this model of spine care and apply it in their daily practices."
Dr. Christine Goertz Appointed Vice Chair of PCORI Board of Governors
Christine Goertz, DC, PhD, the sole chiropractic member of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute since 2010, when the institute was created, has been appointed to serve a three-year term as vice chair of the PCORI Board of Governors. Dr. Goertz is the former vice chancellor of research and health policy at Palmer College of Chiropractic and current chief executive officer of Spine IQ.
The PCORI is an Affordable Care Act-mandated entity whose mission is to "fund research that can help patients and those who care for them make better-informed decisions about the healthcare choices they face every day, guided by those who will use that information." Members of the PCORI board are appointed by the Comptroller General of the United States. The 21-member board includes representation from patient, consumer, clinical, insurance, research, employer, industry, policy and other health care sectors.
