The CCR has put out a call for papers in the form of poster presentations on chiropractic treatment and diagnostic procedures; chiropractic education; clinical practice; spinal physiology; professional issues; and standards of chiropractic care.
The deadline for abstract submission is March 30th; accepted presentations will be notified by April 15th. Cash awards will be given for the best of the chosen abstracts. ACA Announces 7th Annual Chiropractic Sports Science Symposium
The ACA Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness announced its 7th Annual Chiropractic Sports Science Symposium for April 1-4, 1993 in Santa Barbara, California. The symposium will feature 18 hours of educational sessions. Topics will include: chiropractic manipulation in sports; rehabilitation of athletic injuries; equipment and technology in sports; protocol and legal considerations; soft tissue manipulation; the psychology of sports; and how to become involved in the Chiropractic Sports Network, which provides chiropractic care at over 3,000 events nationwide each year. The symposium will highlight leading sports injury speakers, the annual general business meeting of the ACA Sports Council, an awards ceremony at which DCs who served in the Olympics will be honored, and the 40-booth Health & Fitness Expo '93. Palmer to Participate in ICA's Romanian Preceptorship Program
Dr. Gary R. Street visited the Palmer campus in December to present information on the ICA's plans for a preceptorship program in Romania. The program would allow 10th trimester students who have completed their clinical and classroom obligations to participate in a six-week program, and rotating them into a free-standing clinic which would be set up near an orphanage in the town of Negra Voda.
Dr. Street described his visit to the Negra Voda orphanage, and reported that he had the opportunity to adjust about 30 children. According to Dr. Street, the conditions in the Romanian orphanages were terribly inferior to those in America. While in the country, Dr. Street had the chance to visit Romania's equivalent of the U.S. surgeon general. "They would like us to do rotations in their hospitals as well as in the orphanages, which also presents an excellent opportunity for us to teach an entire country about chiropractic," he said. The ICA is in the process of getting approval for the program from the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC), and is hopeful that students could be sent to Romania as early as June.
SORSI Names Its International Chiropractor of the Year
Each year the Sacro Occipital Research Society International (SORSI), founded to continue the work of Dr. M.B. DeJarnette, honors one or two of their members for outstanding contributions to chiropractic. Recent honorees have been from England, Japan, and Canada. This year's recipient is Dr. William Kessler of Auburn, Illinois.
Dr. Kessler was honored for his 38-year commitment to chiropractic, the endless time he has given freely teaching on college campuses, and the innovative methods he has developed for integrating Sacro Occipital Techniques (SOT) into his teaching. He has also developed a method of computerizing office records for SOT and craniopathy.
Dr. Kessler is licensed to practice in Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas.
Chiropractor to Present Abstract at Intern'l Conference on Lasers in Medicine
Don Fitz-Ritson, D.C. of Toronto, Canada will be the first chiropractor to make a presentation at the International Conference on Lasers in Medicine. Dr. Fitz-Ritson, in conjunction with Drs. Filonenko and Salansky, will present his abstract "Low energy laser therapy efficacy in extensor neck muscle recovery after whiplash injury." He plans to explain how low energy lasers influence the metabolic processes in tissue and accelerate the body's own healing mechanisms without destructive changes to the tissue itself.
He will also comment on his study, which shows that the laser assists in faster and more pronounced enhancement in the strength of the extensor cervical musculature after trauma.
LACC Faculty Member Lectures at Seoul National University
Paul Hooper, D.C., chairman of the department of principles and practice at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC), lectured to students at Seoul National University in Korea at the invitation of LACC graduate Dr. Dong Joon (Daniel) Yoon of the Korean Physical Therapy Association (KPTA). Dr. Hooper addressed a group of 30 people including the president of KPTA, and the head of the Korean Sports/Physical Therapy Association, who appointed Dr. Hooper as academic advisor to the association. Dr. Hooper has been invited to return to lecture at the university in August.
