By Steven Eggleston, DC, Esq.
Title: Principles of Manual Medicine

Author: American Back Society -- Philip E. Greenman, D.O., FAAO

Publisher: CME Conference Video, 1-800-284-8433

Publication: 4 video tapes -- 6 hours

The American Back Society held a conference May 6-10, 1992 on back pain management.

(See "Highlights of the Spring Symposium on Back Pain" in the July 17, 1992 issue.)

Philip Greenman, D.O. lectures and shows slides for the first three
and one-half hours of the tapes. He speaks of the manipulable
lesion and explains the physiology of it as it relates to the
nervous system, especially the autonomic system. He then shows
manipulation techniques. Fred McAdams, M.D., makes a presentation on the muscle energy system, and Michael Geraci Jr., M.D. presents principles of myofascial release.

This material is essential to every chiropractor and student. In
fact, it is covered quite thoroughly in the first two years of
chiropractic college. The presentation is directed more to an
audience of MDs, i.e., those not familiar with manipulation. DCs
in practice should already be familiar with much of what is
presented.

Production values of the tapes are high. CME Conference Video
added excellent lead-ins and exits to each video. Two cameras were
used to show alternately the slides and the speaker. There is even
a clock insert in the lower left corner of the screen to make it
easy to find the spot you are looking for.

The value of this presentation is relatively low to the practicing
DC. It is not cutting-edge material to our profession. The value
would be high to an MD who wants an introduction to manipulation,
but any chiropractor who doesn't know this information would never
have passed the state boards.

Dr. Greenman's presentation is thorough as he explains the anatomy
and physiology of the spine and related structures. However, the
presentation is very elementary for the practicing DC. In fact,
the videos served only as a reminder to me how much of what I have
learned over the years I now take for granted. It is great that
the American Back Society is covering manual medicine at their
conference, but it is only an interest in what is old news to us.
