"Back to Pain," the 1997 European Chiropractors' Union (ECU) convention will convene May 8-10 in Amsterdam, the capital city of The Netherlands.
Once Europe's most important port, Amsterdam is a city of three-quarters of a million inhabitants lying a precarious 12 feet below sea level. It's the Venice of the North Sea coast, with 63 canals winding through its inner city, whose buildings mostly date from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Attendees will be welcomed by the mayor and aldermen of Amsterdam at a reception in the Amsterdam Historical Museum on Wednesday, May 7th.
Each of the three days of the convention will offer morning presentations and afternoon workshops. The official language of the convention will be English. Some of the speakers and presentations include:
- David Chapman-Smith, secretary general of the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC), editor/publisher of the Chiropractic Report, and council for the Mercy Guidelines: "The International Evolution of Chiropractic in the Past 10 Years"; "Legislation in Europe" (symposium).
- Tammy Rubinstein-de Koekkoek, DC, associate professor in technique and diagnosis at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (1986-1991); commission member of the Mercy Guidelines; and private practitioner in the Netherlands: "Pain as a Tool in Clinical Decision-Making"; "Pain and Chiropractic Treatment Choices" (workshop).
- Anthony Huson, PhD, professor of functional anatomy in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology; advisor in the development of a new curriculum in biomedical technology to be established in Eindhoven in cooperation with the Faculties of Health Science of Maastricht University: "Biomechanics and Anatomy of the Lumbar Spine and Pelvis."
- Anthony Rosner, PhD, director of Research and Education at the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER): "The Chemical Basis of Pain and Its Management."
- Peter McCarthy, senior lecturer physiology, histology, and clinical pharmacology at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic. "Possible Mechanisms through Which Chiropractic May Have an Effect on Pain"; "Viscerosomatic and Somatovisceral Reflexes: a More Comprehensive Physiological Approach to the Clinically Obvious" (co-presenter, round table).
- Craig Liebenson, DC, editor of Rehabilitation of the Spine: A Practitioner's Manual; organizer of the LACC rehabilitation diplomate course; president of the Chiropractic Rehabilitation Certification Board; published extensively in JMPT; columnist for Dynamic Chiropractic: "Relationship of Pain and Dysfunction"; "Propiosensory training for recurrent back pain patients" (workshop).
- Frederick Carrick, DC, PhD, past president of the ACA Council on Neurology, board-certified in neurology and holds diplomate status with the American Chiropractic Academy of Neurology, the American Chiropractic Neurology Board, the American College of Pain Management, and is a fellow of the American College of Chiropractic Neurology: "Pain Generation and Central Nervous System Plasticity," "Neurology" (clinical rounds); and "Facts and Fiction of Neurophysiology" (co-presenter, workshop).
Extracurricular Activities
A black-tie, gala banquet replete with big band music will be held May 10th at the five star Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky.
The sight-seeing agenda includes:
- visiting two Dutch fishing villages where some residents still wear traditional Dutch attire; a visit to a typical Dutch farm where cheese is made in the traditional fashion.
- seeing some of Holland's 945 windmills (a century ago there were 9,000). There will be a tour of a windmill and a visit to a shoemaker's workshop to see how wooden shoes are crafted. After a drive through the countryside, guests will visit the old port of Edam.
- a flower exhibition in Lisse where more than 700 different flowers are displayed in enormous greenhouses and gardens with ponds.
